2) Close to the Edge
3) Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Pt. 1
4) One More Red Nightmare
5) Indiscipline
6 None of the above (please specify)

Why can't we have 2 GOATs?
>>
chris cutler
>>
>>60505533
very true
his work with brand x is stellar
i hate how he got dumbed down in the 80s
>>
tfw you plebs know nothing of good drums
sad desu
>>
>>60505533
>>60506007
OP here, I don't actually think that drumming/musicianship is a competition or that there is a GOAT. I just wanted to have a BB/good drummer discussion
>>
>>60505105
never checked out but sounds real good.

This. Elvin is on equal footing as Tony as well. Bruford is by far the best rock drummer though.

It's hard rock/alternative rock. If you're a jazz purist then you probably won't like it but if you like rock then you should check it out. Here's the best song from it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN-GGeNPQEg
>>
>>60505216
Fuck yes
Love both tho
Also I can't lie, carter Beauford of dmb is the reason I play drums.
>>
>>60506859
>PIL
>hard rock

son
>>
>>60506859
>>60506395
checked out full johnny rotten video and about 15 min of elvin jones and I like both. so much cool shit
>>
>>60507555
have you ever listened to Can?

Because if you haven't experience Jaki, you haven't experience the pinnacle of rock drumming
>>
>>60507547
yea hes a fucking animal. DEEEEVEEE MEETHYEWSS BAYND
>>
>>60507655
I've actually only listened to Tago Mago. and I cant say im a master of the album. I've listened to the first few songs a bunch. I know its pleb of me. But I did take note of the drumming. What album shuld I get after I finally master it?
>>
>>60507696
depends really

if you like airy somewhat ambient, roll on up to Future Days

if you want Tago Mago with less bonkers shit and more structure, Ege Bayasami. Not to be forgotten is Monster Movie which has some nice drumming too

but live bootlegs are fucking essential. Jaki live is just upsetting. He's a human metronome
>>
>>60507733
got ya. thanks. u ever check out the genesis archives version of the lamb lies down on broadway live? phil slays
>>
>>60507547
I know their early work is post-punk. Album is hard rock though.
>>
>>60507751
Phil is really underrated. His drumming just makes half of Genesis' shit. I'm a big fan of their s/t and it's just TIGHT

also in case you haven't heard it, Orgy in Rhythm by Art Blakey is essential percussion-core. First drum-based jazz album. Anything by Max Roach rocks too. We Insist! -- Freedom Suite is a goodie
>>
>>60507774
awesome thanks so much for all the recs. wrote all the shit down. do you play?
>>
>>60505105
fuck, i so want to make fun of this
but, its pretty gud
>>
>>60507809
I'm a guitarist by professional teaching, but I taught myself to play drums to a solid extent and I find percussion to be more important to making a good song than most things

some other essentials for ya
>Melvins - Houdini (Dale fucking Crover)
>Captain Beefheart - both Trout Mask Replica AND Lick My Decals Off, Baby (polyrhythms fucking everywhere)
>Slint (perfect drumming. Not overly techy and wanky like Neal Peart but just wise enough to rock)
>>
>>60507547
PiL have gone through a bunch of different styles. First Issue, Metal Box and The Flowers of Romances are all different forms of post-punk, This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get is new wavey dance rock, Happy? and 9 are radio friendly alternative rock, Album and That What Is Not are the closest they came to making hard rock.
>>
>>60507858
cool cool. i play guitar too. I've shared my old band and this vid a few times on /mu/ so I feel annoying doing it. But this is Me playing Starless w/ John Wetton. The drummer fucking kills it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvAhBCE40do

share anything u got and ill listen.

also i am very familiar with Houdini and the drums.

also I am a beefheart guy so I know all that shit inside and out. I like the later albums alot too. I still think drumming is awesome on shiny beast.

I just got spiderland. cuz i am somewhat of a newfriend. havent listened much to it yet.
>>
>>60507871
>>60507547

dudee genrefags r so fucking annoying. he called it hard rock. so fucking what.
>>
>>60507905
damn, you guys did nice. Damn fine work

Spiderland takes a while to really gel with most people, but when it clicks, it's pretty rad.

my jams are at www.soundcloud.com/lukefrazier

i do it all myself so it's usually pretty sloppy, but i dig it that way

I pulled up my music library so i'll be back with some more drummy drummy albums for ya in a moment
>>
>>60507975
different anon, but please do!

Aby Ngana Diop - Liital
>African polyrhythms and grooves; female vocalist kinda shout raps? It's groovy shit and loads of fun
Pharaoh Sanders - Village of the Pharaohs
>the title track, a 3 movement piece is simply one of the most breathtaking in jazz. The percussion will blow your mind, and with the Egyptian vibes, apeshit saxophone, it's just amazing
Exuma - Exuma
>this one is the Carribean Beefheart. Songs are incredibly catchy, fun, and have great polyrhythms and grooves. "drumming" isn't the main focus here; this is just groove
Luis "Sabu" Martinez - Safari With Sabu
>no one talks about Sabu despite him being a fucking monster of percussion. His Spanish album, "Sabu's Jazz Espagnole" is mindblowing good and Safari with Sabu is much the same.
Bauhaus - In the Flat Field
>most don't think of it, but this post-punk masterpiece has fucking incredible drumming. Double Dare's proto-sludge slog is just phenomenal
Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun
>just listen to it and experience God
>>
oh and just so i can be sure you guys hear this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=990Zq0g4zaY

Brainiac was a real fucking oddity of a punk band anyway in the 90s, but with this, their last track off their last release, their drummer, Tyler Trent, really elevated his drumming to GOAT standards. When I picture amazing drumming that supports the song and doesn't go too obnoxious, this is it
>>
>>60508237
thanks breh
>>
>>60507555
You should check out Album and PiL's other work. Their first three studio albums are nothing like Album but they're absolutely incredible. Some highlights:

Im the guitarist. And i fucking know. Hes really busy and manages a music school. I try so hard just to get him to record on my songs and he seems disinterested to me. But he is so so so so fucking good it hurts me
