I'm sure Folkways have an album of two.
Maori and Australian aboriginal music don't really have anything in common though, do they?

Good thinking. I was thinking Abos from Australia rather than the general term, hence lumping them together.

>According to legend, the Maori migrated by canoe from Hawaiki in eastern Polynesia to New Zealand a thousand years ago.

Why do Kiwis act like NZ is a new country, only 200 years old?

Well the territories of New Zealand probably weren't a country before some british settlers said "hey this is now a country"

A thousand years is a very small amount of time for a place to be inhabited by humans. Compare that to the Aboriginals who are believed to have lived in Australia for 40,000 years. So it is a new country by those standards too

fun fact, new zealand had a huge eagle called Haast's eagle that would've been the largest eagle today if it didn't go extinct in 1400 due to the Maori overhunting the Moa which is now also extinct

the treaty of waitangi was signed in 1840. A document that gave New Zealand Sovereignty and was signed by several Chiefs and British leaders/representatives

>New Zealand is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy,[58] although its constitution is not codified.[59] Elizabeth II is the Queen of New Zealand and the head of state.

>The first Europeans known to have reached New Zealand were Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and his crew in 1642.[29] In a hostile encounter, four crew members were killed and at least one Māori was hit by canister shot.[30] Europeans did not revisit New Zealand until 1769 when British explorer James Cook mapped almost the entire coastline.[29] Following Cook, New Zealand was visited by numerous European and North American whaling, sealing and trading ships. They traded food, metal tools, weapons and other goods for timber, food, artifacts and water.[31] The introduction of the potato and the musket transformed Māori agriculture and warfare. Potatoes provided a reliable food surplus, which enabled longer and more sustained military campaigns.[32] The resulting intertribal Musket Wars encompassed over 600 battles between 1801 and 1840, killing 30,000–40,000 Māori.[33] From the early 19th century, Christian missionaries began to settle New Zealand, eventually converting most of the Māori population.[34] The Māori population declined to around 40 percent of its pre-contact level during the 19th century; introduced diseases were the major factor.
