It's a real life meme to hate on nickelback. I don't think they are good, but I don't bash on them every chance I got neither.
Despise the hate their are still rich so who cares.
It boils down to classicism.
Nickelback is, like ICP and Kid Rock, the kind of music for so-called white trash. The majority of their hate comes from their association with a lower class white fanbase.
Musically, there's really no reason to despise them so vehemently because Nickelback's quality is more or less equal to any other radio rock band.

Everything about this band is the antithesis of rock and roll and There is absolutely no fucking roll, it is just rock and rocks are cold, motionless, and boring. The roll was the fun part. Then they're money hungry perfectionists in a bad way.

Nickelback isn't popular at all anymore. Never hear them talked about. Haven't seen a new album/any new material for 5+ years. The material that exists is forgettable with the tracks all sounding the same and having to rely on curse words on a lot of songs which turns out just makes you sound like edgy.
That being said, Chad does have Avril so my opinion could be derived straight from jealously.

You realize that's the standard now, right? Most bands record in layers, it's very likely that some bands that you are a fan of do as well. Even if something is done live off the floor, almost all of it is played to a click track, edited, and then the drums are supplemented with tons of wav files of sampled drum hits to make them sound bigger and punchier. I hate Nickleback but to make this the reason as to why they suck is a real stretch. I'm not saying either or is the superior method of recording, but the point stands regardless.

They're just not very good. They're is no progress, any song from any album could be replaced by another song from another album, they all sound the same. There is not much to absolutely no diversity in Chad's vocal performance and the lyrics are uninteresting as well.
