I want to become proficient at an instrument, and I'm thinking about learning bass. Any advice or suggestions? Any other instruments I should try learning? I don't want to play a regular guitar because I'm a fag, so please don't suggest that. Thanks~

Learn piano instead. It's like having the ability to play two instruments at once.

listen OP and actually piano will help you understand notes on other instruments. Literally

Okay, thanks guys. I took piano for a few months as a child, but I didn't practice enough because I didn't have the drive. I want to understand music now, and I'm willing to put forth the effort to learn it.

I know how to read music, but outside of that I know next to nothing about it. Any idea where I should start? Thanks for any suggestions

Agreed. If you become moderately proficient at piano technique and understand the basics of music theory it will be very easy and quick to apply these skills to almost any other instrument you'd choose to pick up.

There's a reason that everybody who majors in music at any respectable school is required to take piano classes.

Piano teacher here. Since you can read music, sight reading is a good place to start. Go check out your local music store and find a piano primer that starts out with very basic pieces and gets gradually more advanced. If you can't find anything like that then go with Bartok's Mikrokosmos. Meanwhile start digging into theory and learning to play from lead sheets. A teacher will be very helpful to you but you don't need one if you are self-motivated and can pick up on concepts easily just by reading about them.

learn piano and bass. i always i knew i wanted to play bass but mt first instrument was guitar. mistake.follow ur passion

Piano is like the Latin of instruments its a base that can help you learn others. Bass is also good becuase you learn to hear music from a rhythmic and harmonic standpoint, instead of just hearing the melody you hear what makes good songs

In the spirit of being a new musician, my friend released a new song and video and I would just like to help it get out there.

you're not gonna have fun on bass until you find a drummer and a guitar player to jam with.

Fuck yeah man. I've been playing bass for almost a decade and I absolutely love. I only dabble on the piano and guitar but bass is the shit. All kinds of ska has the best bass lines of all music genres imo. And also bands like Sublime and Pepper got some skanking bass lines.

agreed with these guys
do both
playing bass is great because bass players are probably the hardest to find when you're forming a band
the world doesn't need more guitarists

This but consider something: memes aside if you can play guitar learning bass is quite easy, you won't be a jaco pastorius but you know what I mean, you won't be lost

the opposite isn't true though

yea but learning guitar isn't that easy
