What does /mu/ think of Benny Goodman? Also /jazz/ general
>>60354309
Well.. he was the King of Swing, wasn't he? to be honest I haven't heard too much of his music, but the things I did hear were pretty good. I really like 'After you've gone'.
Overall I think Artie Shaw is more interesting.

I was pretty surprised to learn that he didn't write Sing Sing Sing. It was Louis Prima of all people...
>Goodman and his band were the first american artists to be recordedin the USSR and they were among the first american musicians allowed to tour there
He was a flag-burning commie
Where to start with Jazz? I like the Taxi Driver soundtrack, if that helps at all.
We should do like a pasta for people asking to get into jazz:
>follow the soloists
>if you hear something you really like, look up the player and check out other stuff they do
>look at a few resources, fucking Google stuff
>etc.

You'd like Miles Davis - Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud. Very dark moody Noir soundtrack.

"NO! This guy didn't have any friends. He was too busy playing his clarinet. When Benny Goodman woke up in the morning he went and sat down on the pot and played his clarinet. Then he went into the kitchen and made a cup of coffee and slurped it up through his clarinet. You think a guy like that had any friends? It's a miracle his wife stayed with him for as long as she did."
listening to some 70's ECM, drinking wine, going out to see a free jazz gig later

What are some other good ass 60s jazz albums like pic related?

if you're specifically looking for a similar feel to undercurrent here's a great one
more good ass 60s jazz
Btw, does anyone know what the hell the story with this track is?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UewdpPoJ_Sw
There's like proto-Phil Spector tier production on it and it sounds nothing like the rest of the album.
Is there a good place online where the album's linear notes might be available because I can't see anything obvious people have written online about it's recording.
I NEED more players like Lester Young and Stan Getz in my life.
Where should I look?

any opinions on Albert Ayler's New Grass?
it usually doesn't get much love from neither those who love ayler's free jazz output nor those who like more r&b flavored jazz
I personally love the mix of straight ahead r&b rhythm section and Ayler just wailing away, for example the second solo of New Generation is so much fun

This is like a bad version of Science Fiction desu, but I suppose this came first, huh
>>60357596
Hmh. I don't really see the similarity - New Grass is in many ways a "sell out" album and wears that spirit on it's sleeve and I don't see Science FIction being that way at all
Archie Shepp had some tracks with a similar idea, though
