But part of what makes Areoplane so great is how cohesive it is. I like OAI a lot, but it's diversity keeps it from holding the same kind of weight that ITAOTS has.

I can get behind this. OAI has some better individual songs, and Naomi and Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone are my two favorite songs of theirs, but ITAOTS is definitely a better album as a whole due to how every element is tied to its central themes and it pulls them off so well.
