Yes it does, man.
>>
>>60344247
She isn't a good guitar player. Simple. I took time from my day to at Coachella to go see what all the hype was about. Between her stupid hand puppetry and garbled infantile guitar playing, I left.

If you want to hear some women who can play guitar, check out Jenn Wassner of Wye Oak or Theresa Wayman or Emily Kokal of Warpaint.
>>
>>60344247
Not the anon you're responding to but... holy fuck is this bait? It has nothing to do with the synth like sound and everything to do with the fact that she is randomly strumming aggressively on some random fucking notes, while piling on a shit load of effects. Jamie Fox could play guitar with that shit and sound the same.

I saw Wye Oak open for the National in 2011, Jenn Wasner kicks all kinds of ass. I haven't seen Warpaint live but judging from their records everyone in that band is like, proficient as fuck at music. I think Annie Clark is on that level - yeah, the last 10 seconds of the video is just guitar noise but if you took the time to watch the whole thing she plays a pretty slick solo before that.

Yeah man I play the guitar and piano and am pretty into theory. Like, of course it takes skill and practice to play a solo like she does in that video. It takes a lot of knowledge and skill to put together a song like that.

I also don't think she takes herself nearly as seriously as some people on this board seem to think.

>>60346621
No, Allan Holdsworth is well regarded in the genre
Here's the deal:

If you make "experimental" music just because you can't actually write anything else, it's gonna be bad (like St. Vincent)

If you know what you're doing, and simply don't want to make something conventional and simple, and make experimental music that way, it's gonna be good (a la Allan Holdsworth)
>>
>>60346621

>>
>>60346721
Well, see the quotes around "experimental"
I say that because her fans prop her up as being some genius experimental visionary, and that her guitar playing is "unconventional", when she just makes, as you say, slightly less-normal-than-average pop
Exact point I was trying to make

What I'm saying is that it takes talent to make pop music. Writing her off as a musician because she can't shred like Holdsworth is frankly juvenile. A well-constructed pop song (we can argue over whether St. Vincent writes good songs or not, it won't be productive or interesting) is more difficult to write than a lot of people seem to think. It's a whole different skillset entirely unrelated to your chops on any given instrument
>>
>>60346757
>'E-exact point I was trying to make!' he types, hands trembling from rage. He opens his 'Annie' folder and looks at her Dorito shaped head to calm himself down. 'So qt :3' he thinks to himself. >>
>>60346962
I see where you're coming from, and you're right to a degree. Songwriting is independent from instrumental chops, and seeing as that's more subjective (although I have my own ideas about that), it'd be pointless to argue.
But we can both agree, St. Vincent's guitar skill is nothing special, even in the context of her genre. All I was arguing was that compared to Holdsworth, she can't compare in terms of chops, which is mainly a byproduct of the idioms and genres both musicians occupy
>>
>>60346995
Why?
>>
>>60346986
Except I was criticizing Annie, you fucktard

The thread started with "Is this good guitaring?" Personally I say no, it's not. However with that being said your right. Writing good catchy music is a skill all on it's own which I'm sure to some people she has. I saw her live (For awhile) and the only thing I've seen her do that impressed me was her cover of Kerosene.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?

And Holdsworth is not a shredder. The man has exceptional technical skill and great compostion. That's not a shredder.

>>60347043
Eh, I listened to the Holdsworth examples posted in this thread (including yours) and just heard a bunch of fast playing over elevator music. If the guitar playing was less busy I wouldn't be surprised to hear it on the weather channel or something.

I'll agree he has technical skill but there's no restraint; the music isn't evocative of anything but his Holdsworth's own prowess. It's a vehicle for showboating.

For the record, I think St. Vincent is an adequate guitarist. Not impressive, but not bad either.

>>60347012
It's weird that they'd even be compared in the first place. They come from completely different musical backgrounds There's nothing similar about the way they play, nor should there be. It'd be like saying that John Fahey is shit compared to Holdsworth. Why bother? They set out to do completely different things.
