I'll start.

I interviewed Sean and Ben when I was 13 and we had an incredible two days of hanging out with each other.

On the day of both the show they played in Santa Cruz and when I interviewed them, my dad and I drove them to a local skate park not too far away from the venue because they're crazy about skateboarding. I didn't have a board with me (due to the fact that I don't skate) but I had a blast watching them.

We drove them back to the venue and they put on a fantastic show. In between one of the songs, Sean gave both me and my dad a shout-out that was amazing. He told the crowd about the interview and going to the skate park. What followed the next day was just as incredible.

The next day, we decided to meet up again in the morning and hang out at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk to have some fun. I met up with them inside one of the arcades at the Boardwalk because they were filming some stuff to use in a music video. I walked around with them looking at the different games and me and Sean had a fierce match of air hockey. He won.

Unfortunately, they never did anything with the footage and never used it in any of their music videos as far as I'm aware. They most likely still have footage of me with them around somewhere, though.

Shortly after the Boardwalk, we went to a local record store that AJJ have been to on previous tours and one that I frequently visit whenever I'm in Santa Cruz. We went inside and spent some time crate digging together. They got a whole bunch of records (I forget a lot of what they bought) to bring with them on the rest of the tour. We said goodbye right then and there!

I saw Grimes at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told her how cool it was to meet her in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother her and ask her for photos or anything.

She said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but she kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing her hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard her chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw her trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in her hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Ma'am, you need to pay for those first.” At first she kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, she stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, she kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Matt Mondanile is by far one of the nicest guys I know. I saw him play with Real Estate on two different occasions, open up for Panda Bear once (at the same Boardwalk where I played air hockey with Andrew Jackson Jihad, go figure), and play a headlining show with his backing band as Ducktails.

In between one of the songs during their fantastic set that night, Matt gave an incredible shout-out to me. I was in the front row of this really tiny venue so I was practically standing in front of the band. Here it is transcribed as best as I can remember it:

--

Matt: "This next song is dedicated to OP. He has a music blog. You should check it out, he has a cool writing style. He's the future of music."

Josh da Costa, also of Regal Degal: "Hey, those are some pretty cool shoes, [OP.]"

Matt: "Yeah, what kind of shoes are those, OP? They look comfy."

Me: "Um, I dunno [laughs]. I just bought them at Goodwill!"

Matt: "Cool, they're, like, some no-name brand? They look comfy. They look like socks."

--

That was an absolutely incredible experience. He also gave me a free vinyl copy of his new album, 'St. Catherine,' because I didn't have enough money with me!

My dad drunk beer with Townes Van Zandt once. I actually thought he was bullshitting but then the dates for when he would've been in town lined up perfectly in two biographies I read.

Got one more, and hoo boy, this was something else. Something that I'll never, ever forget.

Iggy and The Stooges were headlining the C2SV Music and Technology Festival in San Jose in 2013. There were a whole bunch of other cool bands playing that year, too, such as Bosnian Rainbows, The Lemonheads, Thee Oh Sees, Deafheaven (where the infamous interview took place), and others. I had an incredible two days so far of being at this amazing festival, and it all came down to the final act on the final day.

I saw Iggy and The Stooges put on an explosive live show, one of the best I have ever seen. It was intense and everything I ever imagined it could be. And, shockingly enough, during some of the songs, Iggy started looking at me (I was standing right in front of the press pit but a bit to the right) and even came off the stage and put the microphone between both of us so I could fucking sing with him.

If you think I'm making this up, someone from the event took a photo of this very moment:

Funny enough, Iggy initially thought I was a girl based on my appearance. Right before the band played "Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell," Iggy looked directly at me from the stage and said something along the lines of:

"There's a beautiful girl in the audience tonight with a pretty face...

BUT YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING TO HELL!!!!!!!!!"

The rest of the concert was a fucking blast. Like I said: one of the best I have ever seen.

Has anyone ever done a "meet & greet" with their favorite band? what was it like? Was it awkward? I considered doing it once in order to see the entire soundcheck which was part of the deal but the prospect of having to talk to them made me pussy out.

I saw Tyler the Creator the other night @ the Surf Curse show @ the Smell. He got pissed and left after I said "Hey Tyler" I just wanted to ask him about Earl but I guess he's still in that "I hate publicity and everyone" phase.

I got to meet Kevin Barnes after an amazing set in Tokyo. Shook his hand, talked to him about his music for a little bit, translated between him and some Japanese fans, and then headed out. Really genuine guy. Seemed appreciative that his music had an affect on so many people. He also has very soft hands.

I usually just say they were great and shake their hand. Ever since I started going to concerts, I have had a thing for shaking the guitarists hand. I thought I would get their mojo or something in terms of playing guitar. Now it's sort of a habit that stuck.
Other than that, I don't know what the fuck to say to them most of the time. The few times I have talked to a few, they've been nice. Can't remember many, but it's usually just small talk. I dislike people who kind of muscle their way into conversations and later say they are friends and shit.
Christian Bland of The Black Angels is a cool as fuck dude and likes talking about gear and guitars and stuff

I met Nobunny and his band (including Pookie Poodle on bass) a couple days ago. They were all very friendly. I met Justin Champlin (Nobunny) after the show and told him it was a great show and tell Nobunny I said thanks. He laughed and said, "Nobunny knows where he is!" We shot the shit for a little while. They were all very appreciative for the thanks and signed some shit for me. 10/10, would meet again.

In b4 you're a slut

I slept with both James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica in the same night. (After a show I attended)
Kirk is a complete sweetie. Very kind. Hung out and smoked with him after. Probably my best hookup too. James was a bit of a dick and I left right after.

My uncle is a sports journalist and sat by Eddie Vedder during a baseball game he was covering. He basically acted like what you'd expect Eddie Vedder to act like. Super nice, bought everybody beer and hot dogs, no ego whatsoever.

I was gonna write a post about how this thread is lame and how meeting musicians isn't really cool. Most of my friends are in bands that I like so it's nothing special. But then I remembered I've had a few star struck moments myself so I probably shouldn't try and act too cool.

I got to meet Sugi (Akihiko Sugimoto, the artist and former bass player for Warhead) when he came over with Forward in 2012. He barely speaks any English and he's really quiet, but it was an absolute honor to meet him.

On that same note getting to meet Ishiya of Death Side/Forward was really cool. Just don't wear any bootlegged Japanese punk shirts around him.

I also had a chance to briefly meet Masaki from Kriegshog after they played their final show at Chaos in Tejas 2011 (they flew to Texas to play 2 shows before breaking up). I told him something to the effect of "thanks you so much for coming over here to play" and he seemed really confused. In fact, in general he seemed really confused that folks over in America were really into his band. I guess to him it just wasn't a big deal.

After Fun Fun Fun Fest 2008 my friend, who was dating the vocalist for Bitter End at the time, was my ride back to the place where I was staying. She was like "Oh, we're gonna go get dinner with the Cro-mags first, is that okay". Fuck yeah it was. On the way to a 24 hour vegan restaurant I sat in the back of a tiny Corolla wedged between AJ Novello and Craig Ahead (Sick of It All was the band that got me into hardcore punk so...) and we got into a really in depth conversation about quantum mechanics. And then while we were eating I accidentally stole some of John Joseph's chips and he gave me shit about it (in a joking way, he's actually super nice). And as we were leaving DR. KNOW FROM THE FUCKING BAD BRAINS!!!! shows up. What a fucking night.
