Let's talk about jazz /mu/.

What have you listened to or discovered lately and what would be your dream band to record an album together?

How about we also talk about recent jazz records that are amazing instead of always looking back at the greats. Don't get me wrong I love all that stuff, it's just these threads never talk about recent jazz records.
>>
Reminder that if you like talking about jazz you should be posting in the weekly blindfold test threads
>>
>>60326977
Glasper has some good recordings but isn't this really more of an R&B album? It's pretty good either way I guess.

Anyway what collaborations or recordings would you like to see from current artists?

Avishai Cohen's records are amazing, Dave Holland is still pumping out great shit. Chris Potter's records are really solid. Snarky Puppy's Family Dinner Vol. 2 is coming out soon so I'm hyped for that. I'm also into Australian Jazz so Barney McAll's Mooroolbark is my favourite jazz record of this year. And yeah Black Radio I would say is R'n'B/Jazz.
>>
>>60327120
Yeah but like who would you like to see actually record together in the next couple of years?
>>
>>60327171
Avishai Cohen and Chris Potter definitely. Steve Nelson and Dave Douglas would be pretty cool as well. Also I'd really like to see Gary Burton collab with Dave Holland again like they did in Like Minds. In terms of younger jazz musicians, Julian Lage would be cool to see with someone like Esperanza Spalding or even Bob Reynolds.
>>
How often do you guys re-listen to jazz albums as compared to listening to something you've never heard?

Lately I feel like I'm trying to get through too much new stuff without fully absorbing it.
>>
>>60326468
How about-

Eric Dolphy
John Coltrane
Freddie Hubbard
McCoy Tyner
Mingus
Elvin Jones

Currently listening to pic related. Pretty crazy. I'm not sure what to think about it.

>>60327035
>Anyway what collaborations or recordings would you like to see from current artists?

Chris Potter alto sax
Conrad Herwig trombone
Orrin Evans piano
Christian McBride bass
Donald Edwards drums

>>60327301
At first I read that as Ari Hoenig and Chris Potter and I was excited to post the great album that they already play on together. I'm assuming you mean bass player Avishai? I think I'd rather see Potter do something with trumpet Avishai actually.

>>60327432
I'd estimate I spend about 3x as much time re-listening than I spend listening to new stuff.
>>

Did Mingus like Coltrane? Are there any interviews where it comes up?

I've recently had a tiny epiphany and wanted to start getting a real taste of jazz. There have been songs here and there that I enjoy, but I know I haven't even touched the surface. Could I get some reccommendations based on the stuff from the Katamari Damashii soundtrack? I like the use of flute, and maybe more on the lively side?

I don't usually like asking for recs, but given the broad span of jazz I feel a little overwhelmed. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, is acid jazz a thing?

there were very few instrumental albums made in Ethiopia in the 60's and 70's so it's really mostly Mulatu and Hailu Mergia

The Ethiopiques -series is probably the best way of exploring Ethiopian pop and jazz in general, there's jazz in there too:

bump for unusual records
at first I was sceptical about a accordion/harp fronted quintet, but I have to admit it manages to stay out of the DUDE UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS LMAO clichés and creates something on his own, kinda like a fusion between bop and swing

Okay so I've been asking older relatives, family, friends, to see if anyone's heard of this goddess of Jazz music. But seriously go listen to this album Angel of the Night. Listen to "I Try" and "Angel of the Night". Both great tracks, but entire album is a work of art. Also don't know if Marvin Gaye counts but he's a complete legend.
>>
I'm listening to hard bop and fusion from the 1950s-70s. Where can I go from here? Looking for something I've not heard before but still with some form. I just couldn't "get" into Free Jazz.

Examples of my favorites are:
Herbie Hancock
Chick Corea
Art Blakey
Elvin Jones
Miles Davis
>>
>>60328981
acid jazz as a genre term is IMHO mostly only used to refer to music from the mid-80's to mid-90's, so I wouldn't call it a living genre

however, electronic influences in jazz are still very much a thing and that kind of fusion has only been getting more popular, especially in Europe, after the success and popularity of Esbjörn Svensson Trio early in this century

Kind of Blue by Miles Davis is what you should start with if you've never listened to Jazz. But it's not what you're looking for in terms of mood.

I would recommend the album Light as a Feather by Return to Forever. It's more on the Brazillian and Fusion side of Jazz with no swing but has very fun songs with some Flute on the last track that I hope you'll enjoy.

>Also, is acid jazz a thing?

Acid jazz uses live bands and combines elements of jazz, soul, funk and disco, characterised by danceable grooves, and long, repetitive compositions

Nu jazz was pioneered by a jazz musician and features predominately jazz music with electronic influence and instrumentation.

Future jazz is taking jazz theory, free improvisation and incorporation of jazz harmony and composition into electronic music production, typically house or techno.

Broken beat can be characterized by syncopated rhythm typically in 4/4 meter, with staggered or punctuated snare beats and/or hand claps. Artists mostly have a drum and bass, house, hip hop, techno or acid jazz background with roots in 1970s jazz fusion

But these are more ''electronic'' than jazz for the most part.

Looking for recs. I love jazz, but I really only have the obvious classics by the obvious artists like Coltrane, Davis, Adderly etc.

I'm really into anything, just looking for great music.

if you're open to anything you should rather look on discogs and explore
at the end you have 50+ tabs oen but some weeks worth of new jazz to listen to
>>
>>60332280
Yeah, I kind of want to avoid doing that. I'm probably asking way too much considering I already know jazz has a monumentally large catalogue of music to look for. Just looking for some "go to" albums that aren't necessarily by all of the obvious jazz greats.

maybe try Harold Land,he's not talked about that much and is quite the potent player
but in the end, if you want to get into less known players you will have to do some research, because tey rarely played with the big shots, so you won't hear of them as easily

Got pic related two or three days ago and I've been playing it a good bit since. Can't get over how well arranged it is and how tight everything sounds.

Also been listening to a bit of Tomasz Stanko. Got the album from the blindfold test and it's really good. I'd reccomend it.
