Honestly laughing stock is my least favourite of the Spirit --> Laughing Stock --> Hollis trilogy. It also took the most listens for me to 'get'. It's still fantastic though so definitely delve further into that. Check out Mark Hollis' solo LP too.

What'ja think of Black Monk Time? I felt like it was pretty subpar garage rock that gets way more hype than it deserves purely due to being classified as protopunk. Not bad, but kind of a lamer MC5 and more garage-y than punk-y.
6/10 imo

I enjoyed it, probably an 8. I mean I think for '66 it's pretty unique, and the fact it doesn't take itself too seriously and holds up with solid song-writing makes it likeable for me. I mean I think it's influential and unique for its time, but I don't think it's amazing would be my summary.

Definitely pushed boundries for '66, thats why I had such a hard time assessing it. I'd draw parallels between it and ramones s/t in that they are important and influencial but not necessarily great. Thanks for the reply - interesting to see other's perspectives.
