these bad boys, the sony xba-h1 earbuds. bought them two years ago and haven't had a single issue.
I was planning to buy the shure se215 but I'm not sure because of their price. Meanwhile I'm using Sennheiser cx 300

Owned a few more expensive Audio Technica in-ears in the past but honestly these blow them out of the water. The build quality is rather flimsy unfortunately but the sound is incredible for the cheap price.
Didn't know /mu/ used earbuds.
Some $17 Sony ones.
Found genuine piston III's on Amazon.ca and snapped them up, I've been pleased but I wouldn't go higher. Diminishing returns is real.

Earbuds almost always sound like shit.
As for the others it differs entirely from model to model and depends how much you want to spend. IEMs tend to sound "narrower" than headphones but they're generally the best solution for portable/outdoor listening.

all range in sound quality. headphones are not necessarily better than in ears. price is also not a good indication of build quality or sound quality. therefore it's almost impossible to answer such a general question about sound quality in headphones and iems.
earbuds are shit though as they cannot seal your ear properly and all the bass put out by the driver is lost because of sealing issues.
