Pic is my current guitar. 1972 SG II. Beat to shit, only one pic up works, the previous owner replaced the originals with some cheap shitty ones anyway. Need to replace the Bridge with a wrap over tune-o-matic for stability and use ability.
My amp is a Tiny Terror, best investment I ever made gear wise.

I've been playing about 10 years, started to go down hill a bit recently because I've not had enough time. But I'm trying to get a three piece hardcore band together. Found a drummer and a bassist who are both up for it.

Sup.
>>
>>60274102
A few years ago I was after one of those. They're usable, but the "tone-wicker" is basically a bright switch as far as I can tell. If you got a good deal and didn't buy new, then yeah why not.

Why is there so much hate on Rob Chapman here?
Also are his guitars any good?
>>
>>60274275
Because he's popular. I remember when he first started out. He's just a guy.
>>
>>60274102
I fucking hate them myself, but I guess that's just a taste thing; lots of people love them.

TS808 all the way for me.
>>
>>60274275
>Why is there so much hate on Rob Chapman here?
Envy mainly, he was a usual dude that started a guitar company, 90% people here would love that too.
>Also are his guitars any good?
They are okay, but overpriced as hell
>>
>>60274275
He made a documentary about his own band. His band made their own masterclass of learning how to sound like them. I mean, he's not a horrible guitarist, he just isn't that great and his style is pretty limited. What makes Chapman annoying is his ego. He THINKS he is amazing.
>>
>>60274212
Are you sure those pickups are replaced? They sure look original to me.

The SGII had black plastic covered mini HBs and a stoptail bridge just like yours does. I'd take it to a repair guy to get it looked at before you go about modding it. It could be something as simple as a switch that has gone bad.
>>
I like playing guitar, but just practicing scales is boring and I'm too shit to play the songs I like. I have no motivation to practice, half the time.
>>
>>60274494
Learn the songs you like, slowly, step by step, start really slow, and then build up the speed. It's not that hard
>>
>>60274413
I'm 90% sure the it's the switch that went actually. And yeah, the wiring inside is dodgy enough to make me think that they might be replaced.

I did have it looked over by a repair guy as well, but I've been too busy to take it in and get it really sorted.
>>
>>60274494
I taught my self guitar by just having it on my lap all the time when I was doing other shit.

On the computer? Guitar on my lap.
Eating dinner? Guitar on my lap.
Playing vidja? Guitar on my lap.

Just make it inevitable.

Download rocksmith 2014 and buy a rocksmith cable. its a fun way to learn guitar. its not the best way... but sure is fun. once you can play a little switch to a more serious way of leaning.
also rocksmith has some "fun" mini-games for scales and such.
>>
>>60274620
sorry for that pick. it wasn't supposed to upload.
On a side note. i will be picking up that guitar tomorrow, my 2nd. cant wait.
>>
If I'm fed up of hearing one thing its that people "lack motivation". Fuck your motivation, just do it. If you force yourself to do it for 10 minutes you'll probably find yourself doing it for 20/30 minutes and enjoying it.

Just make doing SOMETHING towards your goals an unavoidable part of your life.
>>
>>60274275
Chapman's just a regular guy who has a decent gig at Anderton's. He managed to become popular enough that Anderton's decided to start a guitar line with his name on it. Despite all that, he's just a regular guy with regular guy-level flaws, most notoriously a lack of ability to take criticism from anonymous people on the Internet.
This rubbed at least one anon here the wrong way, and it resulted in lots of people openly hating him here.

As for the guitars, they're quality. They're made by World Guitar Company in South Korea, the same plant that made all the MIK Epiphones for Gibson and a bunch of overseas models for lots of other makers. About the only thing that's strange about them is the specs, but that's on Chapman and not the makers.

Sgs are great I have an epi version cost me 300 second hand did I get ripped off?
>>
>>60274494
Make up your own songs. Every time you pick up the guitar look for a new lick. I also get bored when I spend a lot of time on scales, so I switch back to making music and the enjoyment comes back. Strike a balance between technique and creativity.
>>
>>60275776
Joining the body at the 13th fret probably gives off more sustain. I'm guessing you can also rest your hand on the "horn" when tapping.
Also it doesn't hinder upper fret access, there's been basses with this shape for years now.
>>
>>60275812
I know like, one scale. I've just decided to learn the standard stuff like Johnny B Goode so I can still raise my finger dexterity and not bore myself to death.
>>
>>60275781
If it's the set neck Epi SG, that's about what they go for.
If it's the bolt neck, you spent about $50-75 too much.
>>
>>60275897
Sor Studies are always good for dexterity.
>>
>>60274345
I know where you are coming from with the muff hate, but every since getting into smashing pumpkins I've gone to thinking they're shitty to thinking that they can make some of the sickest tones I've ever heard.

No.
>>
How long is it gonna take me to stop being so slow at chord changes?

This is hands down the hardest part of learning the guitar for me right now. Switching between chords AND making sure the sound good and aren't completely botched.
>>
>>60276830
Any recommendations? Keep in mind that it has to be cheap.
>>
>>60276795
yes, if you hate yourself
get a used mim strat or something
even a used squier standard (not bullet or affinity) would work well

I was jamming with my dad (He was on the bass) yesterday and for the second time, I noticed how the bass amp destroyed my Marshall, so, I thought a bit about it. Seems like having it with the rear against the wall wasn't a great idea and rearranged everything in this way, sound really improved on the lower and and it definitely sounds bigger now. Silly me.

When I heard about counterfeit Gibsons and Fenders, I started to worry about being taken in by a fake Jackson. LEL, it doesn't look likely to happen any time soon.
>>
>>60277902

Huh, like a fat Strat basically, and that's what it is. Twangy but with plenty of lower end due to the pickups, that btw, are single coils (SD Phat Cat).

I don't use it tho since it doesn't sound good with the Marshall, neither with the things I play. I want to try it with a Fender amp or something more vintage and see how does that work. That P-Bass is great, lots of different sounds and really comfy.

>>60277611
...And 9/10 guitarists in the world have bad form. Your teacher is right to fuss at you about it, because you're building habits right now. He wants you to build GOOD habits, so everything else becomes easier.
You can't progress beyond a certain point if you don't have good form. Learn good form now and the rest of the time playing guitar gets to be the fun stuff. Don't learn good form and it all becomes work on improving your form to overcome the problems your shitty form gets you into.

Under £500 you'll not do much better. Blackstar equivalent is too modern sounding, everything else is trash. A mic'd up terror is as loud as you'll ever need and with a fuzz in front gain wont be an issue.
>>
>>60278748
get a fuzz for the doom stuff and a boost pedal for your black gaze stuff, maybe a reverb pedal aswell for your blackgays
>>
>>60278750

that guitar is fucking horrible m8, you won't last 2 weeks playing on that thing and I guarantee the amp is going to be so useless you'll never want to take the trouble to actually hook all of your shit up and play out loud.

Buying the cheapest starter pack possible is SETTING YOURSELF UP TO FAIL. You're admitting that you're approaching your new hobby with the intention of quitting (minimizing your loss by getting a shit instrument)

Save up $300 up a nice beginner guitar like an Epiphone LP or a used Fender mim strat that will hold all resale value if you decide to quit.

if i were you i wouldnt pay full price for a cab, especially orange. I know they make excellent cabs but they are fucking expensive. Go used for the cab, you can probably find something decent, more speakers, for much less money
>>
>>60278906
alright, I don't really know anything about cabs, what should I be looking for?
>>
>>60278857
Definitely look into some second hand gear mate, first hand is usually a rip off. You can probably save £100 second hand.

As for pedals with the other cash, Try to find a second hand Devi Ever Hyperion or something similar. Something that's harsher than a Muff, but less than £100
>>
>>60277008
If you can get something like a monthly payment setup I would try looking at the more expensive basses. There is nothing worse than buying a low end bass and not wanting to play it because you don't like it.
I bought a Fender American Standard Jazz Bass as my first a couple months ago and I can't put it down. Even though I'm paying it off for a year, it was worth it. No interest either.

>>60279202
i think you might be surprised, lugging around a 4x12 is a pain. If youre not playing shows too often a 2x12 is more reasonable to sit in a room. If you get out and do a show that doesnt have a PA system, and you REALLY need more volume, you can always buy a second one or get/make a device that angles your cab upwards.

All that being said, youre playing through a tiny terror in the end and will likely rely on a PA system micing up your cab to get your volume to suitable levels, a 412 cab wont help atall in that situation, but dont get me wrong, 412s do look pretty cool.

And im pretty sure the older the marshall cab the more desirable it will be, as long as it works corrrectly.
>>
>>60279317
>>60279202

Also, just want to point out that one of the advantages of the terror is that you can carry it around really fucking easily. It's like a lunch box. I've even got a back with a shoulder strap.

As long as theres a cab at the venue, you can always use that instead of lugging a cab about. I've turned up to a lot of gigs with a guitar in one hand and my terror in the other.
>>
>>60279370
that's pretty cool
I was wondering how it'll handle cleaner tones for blackgaze though, since it's single channel would I just have to set it for clean and use my pedals?

Sorry for taking so long to answer. They're 2 DVDs so it's probably going to clock at 7 gigs or something. The files are all in that raw dvd type thing, I haven't tested them yet, I think I'll have to download a DVD emulator or whatever it is.

Anyway It'll not be done until at least tomorrow evening, since I only have half the parts. The download cooldown is 3 hours so a friend downloaded the other half and still has to pass them to me.

>>
>>60276570
My main dirt sound is a Big Muff with the sustain turned almost completely off, volume and tone on 11 o clock.
The key to usable Muff sounds is volume and backing off the sustain. You can't expect these to sound good at practice amp levels.
>>
>>60280938
if youre playing squire, dont jump to the conclusion that it's your amp. chances are it's your squier. squiers are shit tier.

So I have a epiphone SG i got like six years ago and I've gotten to the point where I don't like my tone at all. The low strings either sound super bassey or dull, as if I was lightly muting them, and the high strings sound either brittle/screechy or super quiet. I play jazz, blues, and rock mostly. Can you guys help me out on how to get a warmer tone, with more sustain?

Adjust your pickups until neither the high or low strings sound either screechy or boomy, then level out the pickups so that the high and low strings are balanced volume-wise in each pickup. Finally, adjust your pickup heights from there so that your neck and bridge pickups are about the same volume. You might find that your pickups' sweet spots are a good bit lower than you had them previously.

If you're after an Orange cab without paying Orange prices, look at Avatar. Their 2x12s (and, presumably the rest of their line) are practically the same specs as Orange and up to half the price of a PPC. And you can still get the speakers you want if you configure it new (or get lucky if you find one used).

Got a used Avatar 2x12 for $240 on Craigslist not too long ago. Another $50 for a steal on a Vintage 30 and I've got the cab I want for under $300 whereas an Orange PPC212 used (using eBay for pricing) seems to be in the $500-900 range, depending, though that would probably have 2 Vintage 30s.

I started playing bass for 9 months now and even though I'm not nearly close to being good at it I'm able to play through some basic bass lines through songs (Pixies, etc.)

Anyway, one day at work I had quite a bit of free time to fill but since carrying an heavy bass and amp would be retarded I asked my GF for her classic guitar.

Long story short I started messing with a few chords and I'm having fun now so I'm considering eventually getting a proper acoustic.

Should I? I am already stretched with time between work, sports and GF and don't even have a lot of time to practice the bass so if I pick one up I'm not sure what I would do.

But it's sounds so cooool...

Neck fits me better than Ibanez's Wizard neck. This one is asymmetric. Would prefer a flatter radius than 12" though. Build quality is excellent except for the bridge and tailpiece which feel cheap (they are still very solid). And it comes with Duncans. Overall ridiculously good value for money for under 800€.

>>
>>60286889
You know I never really liked them all that much either. I thought they looked pretty cool but that was about it. The front jack bothers me too but from what I experienced holding one in the shop, they are surprisingly well balanced. I tried playing it for shits and giggles to be honest. That was until I plugged it in with some gain... and holy shit did I love the tone it created. I was sold right in that sound booth.

>>60287101
Yeah same. I absolutely loved the explorer I used to have. I grew pretty tired with the LP though. It was just so heavy and I found it awkward to play sitting down. Something about the SG just kind of clicked for me. I don't know what it was about it. I'm more of a fender guy too so that made it even more out of character. My main guitar that I've had for a while now is my heavily modded 80's 52' AVRI tele.
>>
>>60287101
Not that anon, but I personally find LPs too damn thick to be comfortable.
I would like a guitar with the thickness of an SG, but the shape of a LP.
>>
>>60287106
eehhh...I guess. Here are two hints: the Les Paul is in E standard and the SG is in C standard.
>>
I've been trying to build up some extra cash for a pedalboard and decent amp but I had to pay for car repairs and lost a lot of it. Now that I only have like 200 bucks on hand that I can devote to this does it make sense to just buy an audio interface for now and use digital effects since I'm going to need one to record the amp either way?
>>
>>60287149
How about a Gibson L6S?
>>
Been interested in learning how to play jazz guitar, anyone know what bands I should listen to, that features the guitar prominently?
>>
So I just got my first ever guitar (Les Paul Special II) and now I want to pick up an interface. What's a good and relatively inexpensive interface I can get started with?
>>
>>60287149
I would recommend checking out ESP/LTD. They make some pretty solid Les Paul copies that are thinner and have a chest cutaway like a strat.
>>
Hey /gg/, does classical guitar music usually have position markings or am I supposed to figure out the proper positions myself once I stop being a noob?
>>
>>60287549
grab the focusrite 2i2. its pretty good and relatively inexpensive. id recommend this over something cheaper.
>>
>>60287643
Some cheaper models have dots on the side of neck, but most higher end ones don't. That's just something you have to get used to.
>>

It's not a mix, just me playing over the original song. That's why I put myself so high in the mix.

Just did one take after looking at the TAB a few times, no dual tracking or any real effort to make it sound good. Plan to do it properly at some stage.

Well, they are very rare to come by. I want one, but I only find the original basses, or the guitar versions in a not so good condition.
BTW, if you search for an epiphone RD, you get a MF entry, with no info though. No idea if it will ever come out, if Gibson is testing waters to release a model
>>
>>60288245
So you are playing to a track.

Have you seen the modifications Ryan Bruce made to his RD Standard? I recommend that if you come across one in any condition.

Wanting some feedback on my tone and the playing in general. Was going to upload the isolated take, but looks like I lost it....

I had two brain hemorrhages in August, so it's kind of hard to play at the moment. I don't have full control of my left hand still... so sticking to easy stuff at the moment.
>>
there's something about guitar where I get trapped in chords, listening to jazz or music compositions I like, it's more a melodic line that's riffed over

it's a nuisance , I can come up with a melody line, get a progression that holds it up, but I can't get it in a way that I can play with it

I suppose write out the sheet music and put it in a bottle
>>
>>60288449
That just means that you listen to more music than practice your instrument.
>>60288363
Damn, I pity you. So far, your playing is fine. The tone is a bit oversaturated for that style of music but it works for a sludge tone.
>>
>>60288196
can you hear the game pedal effects through your amp

if not, why not just play through the amp in the first place
>>
>>60288541
>The tone is a bit oversaturated for that style of music but it works for a sludge tone.
What would you recommend changing?

I'm running parallel signals, so it's a TS808 and HM-2 running together. HM-2 boost takes care of the mid range, TS808 boost is taking care of the low end (keeping it tight).

It's a pretty tight tone, just has a ton of middy grind to it.

>>
>>60288627
Just cut the gain a bit, that's all.
>>
>>60288652
There's not really that much gain surprisingly.

Amp is set to 4, both the pedals have drive on 0. Level on TS-808 is maxed, HM-2 is about half way.

My pickup has an absurd amount of upper mids, could be making it sound gainier than it actually is.

Mike Watt used a shitty Squier P-Bass every once in a while and kills it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EP2GATvtr3M

Doug Martsch also uses one every now and again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb7mCHYIkH8
>>
>>60288692
How about lowering the level on the TS-808 by 25%?
>>
>>60288758
I could try lowering the tone slightly. It'll take some of the mids and treble out. Lowering the level defeats the purpose of using it really quickly.

Got someone building me a preamp at the moment to use instead of the 808. Dead simple, just a two band active EQ (100Hz and 10kHz), with a (up to) 20db boost.

You might be hearing the huge amount of front-end boost I use. I don't use amplifiers with tons of gain, I just slam the front end. Mid-hot pickups with boosts of various kinds.

It creates a cool effect for lead too. Tons of sustain.

What are some scales I can practice 15 mins per day on me Electric guitar so that I can become more dextrous?
>>
>>60288363
I loved the hard muted parts that it starts with, really harsh chopping. The open chords sound good musically to me but might sound better more constrained as it goes a bit mushy, sounds A all together ,
>>
>>60288607
Cause the game actually teaches you guitar

You'd be playing the game to improve your skill
>>
>>60288934
Thanks, I'm using four noise gates, but they're all set really soft. Prefer that to using one hard gate. Using a BKP Painkiller as well, kicks ass for that sort of stuff.

Not my thing usually, but like I said earlier, don't have full left hand control, right hand works fine though haha.

The HM-2 really takes over during the chordal bit. It's not the fastest tracking pedal ever, but it has a cool mid range whenever you slow down a bit, you don't hear it much in the muted bit.

I might wind the upper mids back slightly to tie it all together. Going to mik my cabinet up at some stage and dual track it. Hoping to get a killer tone.

Working on a Bölzer track too for fun.

>That just means that you listen to more music than practice your instrument.

I'm not sure that's true. I spend a lot of time on scales and arpeggios.

when I come to make music I take two or three chords then play trying to describe the chords in the noodling as well as strum and vamp (?) around the chords

coming up with something more complex, well it's only ever me playing so it gets a bit tricky holding it all up myself and blowing without an accompanier ,

then I listened to Peace by Coleman and realise how far away he is from my dirge.

so, if I want to be better, lines of melody , that are then jammed over .....transcribe the chords after, write it out and there's a piece

?

I'm so disappointed because of vidya games in my youth and bad technique I have damn near carpal tunnel in my hand so my guitar skills are shit and sloppy now.

Then my right hand is all blitzkrieg all the time because I'm high as fuck on amphetamines so I play songs at like 1.5x the tempo if I'm not playing attention and then I picked up this weird tremolo flick thing from listening to some Jimmy Page Obscuria so I do that all the time with my lead play out of habit, and then I like to play with my tempo as a dynamics which I picked up from listening to chinese pipa players . Honestly my shits all fucked to the point that I might just play synth.
>>
>>60288868
Pick a major scale in any key, and then play in in ascending intervals other than seconds. So start with C, then play E, then G, B, D, F, and A: that's C major ascending in thirds. Your dexterity will really need to adapt to moving in sixths and sevenths once you get to that point, since the interval shapes will probably be really unfamiliar.

Hey guys. How do you into songwriting? Do you start with the music, like write one riff and build a song around it, or do you take an idea or a feeling or write around that? I tried throwing riffs at the wall and seeing what sticks but I have no idea when a song is finished and they just seem to be meaningless pieces of musical ideas.

I would really like to hear how you anons write your songs. The thought and the writing process especially.

I lie in the darkness in the corpse yoga position trying to relax enough so my heart doesn't strangle itself to death, then I might put on a lamp , wonder if I've the petrol to get to a really high multi storey or something, then play a bit and see what happens. if it's a standout night I might put it in my old music book or write it out on the wall. sometimes I sit in hedges.

I want to learn how to play guitar, I tried a bit when I was in high school but I wasn't really dedicated enough and was really only able to play a couple of basic things (i.e. Smoke on the water riff)

My fingers are reasonably dexterous and I really want to find a new hobby, I don't expect I'll ever be more than passable but I have a couple questions if anyone is kind enough to answer

As a beginner should I go for acoustic or electric? (I'm leaning acoustic, I really want to learn how to play Old Man by Neil young for some reason)

How much should I spend on a guitar, excluding extras like a tuner/stand and all that?

Is it reasonably possible to teach myself using YouTube videos or books or something like that/what's a good self learning resource?

Any recommendations for a first guitar/are any of those "beginner bundle" type deals any good? I don't want to spend a fortune but I also don't want a shitty guitar that I'll have to replace in six months
>>
>>60291539
buy and electric and get an acoustic simulator pedal, then you will be able to play other things aswell
>>
>>60291539
>I want to learn how to play guitar
First, you got's to tell me why do you want to play the guitar.
>>
>>60291651
Mostly just self improvement, I want a hobby that I can teach myself. I want to be able to sit on my back patio by myself and just play some songs I like.
>>
I'm looking into a Jazzmaster
Why tf have they changed the pickups in some models and made them fucking humbuckers
>>
>>60291698
Then you might have problems learning by yourself. Might have, I don't know you so I'm not saying for sure but in my experience people who just want a "hobby" usually give up easily when things get too hard.

Anyway, you should go for it.
>>
onvince me not to buy a squier j mascis jazzmaster right now
>>
>>60291771
I guess hobby wasn't the right word. I want something I can dedicate myself to and get better at all the time, not like something I do for an hour or so a couple times a week. I want to challenge myself, I'm just not trying to become some kind of pro or impress people, I'd be happy if I was the only person I ever played for.

That being said, what do you think about this?

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Les-Paul-Electric-Guitar-Player-Pack-Ebony-1345561599805.gc

I think one of my friends in high school had this same guitar when he was learning, and I used it a few times and it felt comfortable to me, and at least to my untrained ear it sounded pretty damn good when he played it

I know the amp it comes with is probably a piece of shit, but for the most part is probably just be using headphones to not bother my roomates

If you buy separate and maybe second hand stuff you would definitely get better gear senpai.
How much are you thinking to spend?

In any case, best of luck, taking up guitar was the best decision I made in a personal level and the worst economic one (I always want something).
>>
>>60291895
I'm not really sure yet what my max budget would be, I'm starting a new job this week that pays much better than my last, but I'm also supposed to be saving for a car so something between 200-300 would probably be ideal.

Far as I can tell I'd need: guitar, amp, tuner, stand, and a half decent pair of headphones that doesn't cost a fortune. I'd rather avoid buying secondhand though because it would be hard for me to judge it's condition (obvious shit like the neck not being straight I would notice, but I'm not confident enough in my guitar knowledge to not overlook less obvious issues)

I'm more than open to guitar recommendations, I'm sure I could figure out a decent amp within my budget once I found the right guitar.

No, it doesn't. You're generally assumed to have studied enough to know how to read off of sheet music by the time you get to the point of playing classical music for people.

You don't need to know jack shit about guitars to buy one second hand.

Just you know, don't buy a Gibson for 100 bucks and try the thing out before you buy it. You'll notice if it's fucked if you aren't over excited about buying it. Just look for something you like, look around the google for info about the model and you should be good.

I bought my first guitar 4 years ago second hand and didn't know anything about this stuff. I just looked around internet what people had to say about it and listened some demos of it, to get a feeling what it's supposed to sound like. It still works great, doe it havent got any play in months because lol fucking broke and I need strings for it. My other guitar which is my main has been missing the high E string for 2 months now, because fuck me I'm poor.
>>
>>60292154
Also it enables the guitarist to make the decision where they will play a give note/passage/chord for the effect they feel is appropriate without having someone else retarded fingerings in the way.

Having said that quite a lot of editions (often the only edition of some modern work) have shit pre-written all over them
>>
>>60288178
Chalk that up to Bill Lawrence.
He was hired by Norlin and tasked with restoring innovation to the Gibson line. And he did. He designed the L6S to give working musicians the most versatile instrument they could find, with a full 24 fret neck, and check out the pickup switching options on the L6S-it's every combination possible to get from two pickups without coil splitting.
And that's just the start. The Marauder and S-1 were designed to go head-to-head with Fender, a response to Fender hiring Seth Lover and putting humbuckers into their Telecaster Deluxe.
