Recommended Mahler 5 recordings?
kubelik's early concertgebouw recording with the Mengelberg/Beinum orchestra from 1951 is still my favorite. the quality of the recorded sound isn't the best, but it's still far and away my favorite interpretation of the piece. it has quite the timpani presence.
walter, barshai, karajan (get the live one, if you can find it), mitropoulos, maderna, and scherchen (VSOO) are all great too.

They were going atonal 100 years ago. Nowadays there are plenty returning to more traditional melody. Auerbach, Adams, Rautavaara, Glass/Reich if you like them, Fairouz, etc.

Ended up grabbing the Barshai since it was the first one I could find on rutracker (couldn't find the Kubelik). It was very lovely. The clash at the end of the second movement was done very well I thought.
Is the Kubelik one not uploaded anywhere or something? I couldn't find it or any mention of it in the usual places.
