Alright fellas. I recorded with two pairs of mics, and I'm having a hard time determining which one sound best. One pair is clear and quiet, but has very little low end and it's kind of chintzy sounding, the other pair is immersive and organic as fuck but there's more noise. I think the first one was better sounding though
>>
>>55578652
Thanks for the response! It's bothersome to me because I got a new omni mic setup and they're really nice, but because my recorder isn't god-tier it has noisy preamps so now my omnis don't sound so great. It sucks. The onboard mics are really sensitive and crisp (first one) but they're cardioid and therefore they color the sound a lot and they aren't as immersive and "real" sounding. Sadly, the omni ones are way nicer in almost every way ecxept they're noisier through the preamps, which kind of kills it.

Maybe I can mix all of them for a best-of-both-worlds thing, without too much phasing...
>>
>>55568308

Mono/Poly is dope.

I own a flesh and blood Mono/Poly, and I still find the plugins useful for the voice unison mode and the effects.

Hey /prod/

Don't know where else to ask and it's a little off topic, but how do I record the sound running through my soundcard. No, I'm not trying to make shitty rips from youtube vids.

I found a Chrome extension which records audio in wav but the audio comes out pretty bad.

Also, to at least half stay on topic, what string libraries are good for pop other than NI session strings? The big commercial libraries all sound too lush(?) for pop, I find it hard to achieve that more intimate chamber ensemble type sound.
>>
https://clyp.it/jxsrxgni

Unmixed and mastered. Thoughts so far?
>>
>>55578774

waves meta flanger
waves J37 tape delay
valhalla vintage verb
native instruments solid bus comp
toneboosters equaliser.

That pretty much has me covered. I like to keep it quite simple with plugins or else I end up with lists of hundreds of plugins and it drives me mad.
That said I just noticed that the tape tubes and transistors pack by waves is on sale so might grab that later today, as I'm interested in the PIE compressor and the EQ the master tape also has delay and as far as I'm concerned another tape delay couldn't hurt could it?

I'm just going to add a few more things here if anybody is interested.

If anyone is just getting started with non stock plugins and looking for a cheap good all round pack the toneboosters track essentials is a great choice. It has reverbs, choruses, flangers, phasers, tape delay, EQ, Dehisser, gate, compressor and tape simulator.

Also I think that the J37 is probably another great all round plugin and is often on sale, not only does it emulate reel to reel tape machines it has some fantastic echoes, flanges, phasers and delays. I have lost days just sending guitar or organ sounds through this thing. Highly recommended.

Also the Valhalla vintage verb, absolutely fantastically lush reverbs. Best I've tried.

Alright prod, I think I got it now. Did a touch of noise reduction on the omnis (always a risky maneuver with highly ambient recordings) and I think it's better than the ORTF/internal mics now.
>>55570112
>>55576504
>>55577898
>>55578774

I like the onboard mics and they're nice and clear, but they don't have the depth and space of the omnis. I really really wanted to salvage the omni recording (which was originally a little noisy).

Any feedback or opinions would be naice.

onboard ORTF:
https://clyp.it/slr1b2oo

original spaved omnis:
https://clyp.it/oqmqv3lp

denoised spaced omnis:
https://clyp.it/h0nybgxe
>>
>>55589466
I think the bass part needs to be a little more...ballsy ? Maybe it's not what you wanted to make but I think, with the harmonic content and melody being fairly dark, the bass sounds a bit too slick and clean to my taste here.

If it were my track I'd try and make it growl a bit more...
>>
>>55591955

the first one i listened to i thought fuck that noise is loud, but after listening to the one with denoised I'm not sure.

I like them all. Are the unedited apart from the noise reduction?

What the hell is all that noise lemondude, where the hell do you live?
>>
>>55593356
>the first one i listened to i thought fuck that noise is loud, but after listening to the one with denoised I'm not sure.
what do you mean? the "noise" is the mic/preamp hiss... everything else belongs there.

I live in a pretty rural area. It's a couple different kinds of frogs, dogs barking, distant train and traffic, and some wind. The denoised one pretty much got rid of all the hiss and just left the landscape ambience. It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like when you're standing there.

I live in New England and the frogs (spring peepers) are noisy as hell this time of year
>>
>>55593356
oh and yes, they are unedited. i denoised to get rid of hiss but then also added a HPF on the spaced omnis ones, because they're very sensitive to low Hz and get a deep rumble in them from wind and just distant sounds
>>
>>55593735
its the frogs i think they are noisy as hell. they sound really eerie this would make a great horror soundscape i think. I really like this.
>>
>>55594157
yep, it is. i wish I had better surround recording capabilities because it's really cool to be out by the swamps with it all around you. This week I'll be spending an evening down the road a ways at a big wildlife preserve and should get some cool stuff. By summer that place will be awesome sounding.
>>
>>55591955
Loving the denoised spaced omnis now! I like how it has a fuller sound than the onboard mics, hope you can utilize them now!
>>
What are some examples of a good use of the FL X Y controller?
>>
>>55594373
Yeah, I hate to use noise reduction on ambient stuff because usually it messes it all up but it worked out pretty well this time. I'm really happy it makes the omnis useful for these types of recrodings, because like you said, it's much fuller and more realistic with them, as opposed to the cardioids.

I'm not sure what I'll use them for... I kinda like doing field recordings just for the sake of it. Thanks for the feedback!
>>
>>55594446

I can already play drums (I'm that melodic hardcore anon who posted a while back if anyone remembers by chance), and I love Panda Bear's latest album, so hopefully I can start producing some material in that vein over the summer
>>
>>55594506
Well so far really all I have is a handful of coyotes which I've posted a lot already, and then the blizzard one from this past winter, which came-out surprisingly good. Sadly there's not much to record in winter so I haven't done more.

There's nothing too crazy around my house to record except coyotes and other critters. I didn't get any peepers last year, but now that I got them there's not a whole lot left. SO I need to explore more. Got a river and some swamps a ways away I'm going to hit up for the sake of capturing new fauna.
>>
>>55594356
Thats a neat spectrum pic. What are the omnibus you use? I might go down to the local nature reserve myself this week, spent a lot of time there in the winter recording wind and rain, so maybe there are some night critters there to record this time of year.
did you use the high and low pass filters on your recorder or do you filter the recording after in your studio, also what filters do you use?
>>
>>55594938
The omnis are MXL 603s (they come with cardioid capsules but you can buy omni capsules separately for them). I don't use any filters on the recorder, only because I want to be able to make up my mind wholly in post on what to take or leave. I just used a HPF on the omnis because the terrestrial rumble was excessive (even though it's cool beans). For these critical/mastering type things I use Ozone (with the EQ in linear phase mode).

yeah they're decent... for SDC omnis they're about the best you can get. I have a couple omni measurement mics which are great in terms of response, but the capsules are so small they end up being way too noisy. The MXLs are a good balance between price and performance.

That looks neat anon. I think you'll have loads of fun with that.
I've just got back into using a sampler and sampling. Used to use a rack mount sampler but recently got a maschine studio, loving it so far.

I don't. I don't want that riffraff on my Soundcloud.

Thanks, I'm excited to learn sampling over the summer. Nice Maschine, my friend has the original and it seems pretty great!

Yeah I can't wait to learn how to use it a bit more in depth only just got the basics down and there seems to be loads more features I haven't even looked at yet.

Hey, anyone want to do me a favor and torrent a plugin for me and upload it to mega? I'd do it myself but I'm on campus.

This is it:
http://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4032791

It's a collection of a few plugins actually, but all I need is the Decapitator. I really want to try it on some kick drums.

Pic related is the drum set that was used for what I'm working on. I used a sort of modified Glyn Johns method for the mic placement.

Anyone use Renoise who can help me on this?

I have Windows running it and I want to change the input settings so that I can record samples from the audio that is playing on my computer. In Audacity I can switch the input to Window WASAP to do this but in Renoise I the only input options available are primary sound capture and the external mic. Is there a way I can get the WASAP option or anything that can record what goes on in my computer?

I don't know anything about Renoise, but you can download Soundflower, which is like a virtual audio interface. You can use it to route audio within your computer as if the audio going on in your computer was coming/going from a seperate device.

>Soundflower,
this would be a good solution if only it were available for windows, but thanks.

wish i had a mac

I use renoise, I haven't tried it, but I've been told that voicemeeter (http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Voicemeeter/) will allow you to do this.

Let me know.

hi prod letz groove (for about 30 seconds) https://clyp.it/sqrfe3m2

>How is this sounding, /prod/?
The bass needs to be turned up.
The piano could also have a thicker tone.
I also personally prefer a piano with a warmer tone as well.
Maybe add some reverb to it.

>could a rapper work with this
A rapper sure could.

can anyone recommend me some verstile synth VST's?

I don't want a whole bunch because I mostly use samples and effects, but a couple that I can use to create a variety of sounds would be nice. I want the kind that will teach me about synthesis and sequencing rather thank out of the box preset stuff.
>>
Have any of you had a breakthrough in your producing that made you feel like your songs got way better than before? I think it has just happened to me and my utilization of busses. I used to give everything its own reverb or effect but now that I am using busses, everything sounds more reasonable and together rather than just shit.

I think the kick should be about just as loud as your clap. Either way, it's too quiet.

how do you practice your DAW?

I use ableton and i've been doing a ton of remixes lately just so i can get better at getting my ideas down faster without drying myself up creatively.

Do you have any better way of practicing production skills in general?
>>
>>55605412
I wonder this too, sometimes I will make up like a loop and then try to produce it in a couple different ways as far as instrument design and mixing goes. How do you do remixes? I have never done one before but it seems like a good way to practice.

>Have any of you had a breakthrough in your producing that made you feel like your songs got way better than before?
Not that I can recall.
It always sounds a lot better when I actually try though.

I have what could be called a 'love hate relationship' with music.
Some may also say that I have an addiction to it.
I often rush through things just to keep myself from spending too much time, and rush just to get it over with.
I often try to keep myself from making music, but give in to the temptation and get something out of the way so I can get back to more important things.

When I do take some time to work on something, and it sounds good, it ends up being short or unfinished.
