Usually dark music is minimalistic, but is there a good example of dark maximalism?

Requiems
progressive black metal like sigh or something idk
depends on your definition of dark and maximalism
>>55243344
This. Maximalism by composition or instrumentation or whut.
A lot of black metal is founded on the premise of romanticism and sounding menacing and Nihilistic, so I don't think it's the darkness OP is going for.
Technically speaking, serialism. But serialism sucks.
More practically speaking Death Metal and loads of modern classical (Stravinsky for starters).

>dark
The best description I can give of my favorite version of dark music are the Gone Girl and Silent Hill 2 soundtrack. Some melody distorted with dissonance and odd production choices every now and then. Sinister.
>maximalism
Thoughtful uses of layering, space and bombast. Music that sounds large and dense.

I'm not knowledgeable on the style, but surely there exists some good serialism.

This. Perhaps some technical/prog metal (e.g. Cynic, Atheist, Maudlin of the Well etc.)
As far as classical, Bartok can be pretty dark and dissonant. Shostakovich has some twisted melodies. I believe the aggressive rhythms of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring actually caused people to faint and sparked a riot at its premiere.

Say that to my face fucker not online and see what happens

Nine Inch Nails my nigger. The Fragile in particular, or if you're more into instrumentals then check out Still and Ghosts I-IV. Especially since you mentioned Gone Girl, in which Trent Reznor was half of the creative input

I love NIN. I feel like Pretty Hate Machine has some of their best music, but it's bogged down by that godawful 80's pop production.
>>55243977
It's a great album but it's dated as fuck. Takes you to that part of the 80's you never want to revisit. Head Like A Hole still holds up strongly though

He recommended Death Metal in the next breath, I wouldn't waste much time on him.
>>55243611
Anything from the 80's until The Process. VivisectVI, Too Dark Park, and Last Rights are generally regarded as their best albums
