I listened to this for the first time in years this morning... it makes more sense to me hearing it now with more knowledge under my belt.

I'm gonna try Crescent by Coltrane later and maybe something by Monk or Shorter

Most good jazz is this way. You listen to it, then listen to a lot of other stuff then eventually when you get back around to listening to it again you hear new stuff you never noticed before.

It's been a rough couple of months I guess

he's definitely very interesting, he's always worth an indepth listen. was also very ahead of his time too (basically recorded the first free jazz tracks)
>>
>>54891146

I like a lot of Miles but this albums is just so tiring to me. I could never get into it.
>>
>>54891804
It gets a little tiring and less interesting on side 2 I think. Sounds great in mono, by the way.

>>54891588

New sipiagin pretty good. It's a lot like destinations unknown in the sense that it's constently moving and changing. It's not my favorite style of music though. It relies more about the interplay than just trying to create something real and profound. Everything is so challenging so it IS interesting. It's like an intellectual experience rather than an enjoyable or emotional one.

I can upload to mega if you guys want. I got it with 320 kbps

Alex Sipiagin- Balance 38-58 (2015)

>fusion, post-bop, composition
>Sipiagin's latest addition to his growing output on the Criss Cross label. This album mixes rock influences with free-leaning improv in a way that's reminiscent of Joe Henderson's 70's output. This is all combined with Sipiagin's style of intertwining polyphonic melody writing.

I thought it was pretty good overall. It had a lot of the elements I liked about Destinations Unknown. I don't think that music being intellectually stimulating necessarily makes it less enjoyable or less emotional. That said, I think Adam Rogers' playing is sometimes not that emotional and on this album his solos were my least favorite. I thought he challenged and pushed the groove of rhythm section the least.

I also didn't think that the two David Binney tunes at the end really fit with the rest of the album. They would have been cool on a Binney album but I didn't think they really fit that well with Sipiagin's tunes.

>>54894558
not saying it's "soulless wank" or anything. But seems to me like they focused a lot more about interplay than just trying to create beautiful music. It's like they played only for their momentary enjoyment rather than for the listeners enjoyment or as I said, create something beautiful.

They weren't even grooving that well imo.

also, best solo ever.

yea one of my favorite jazz albums as well. really summarizes how jazz should be. I love how all the soloists use their vibrato here, good all fashion shit.

God damn do I love me some Monk
>>
>>54894713
idk.. It's hard to have too much interplay in jazz if you ask me. And I thought the groove was generally pretty good. It's tough to have a strong groove but still have it be flexible enough to make it work with that kind of soloing. Reminds me of some of the better fusion of the 70's in a way. Also I think the band handles the complexity of the music and the time signatures pretty well. That music wouldn't sound good if not played by a pretty good band.
>>
What /mu/ thinks of Weather Report? Also, some band similar to weather report?
>>
>>54895555
Assuming that's you jtg- were the other criss cross releases any good?
>>
>>54896397
they were all pretty decent. Tim Warfields was really good. The other two were slightly above average for the label.

David Binney and Adam Rogers have one coming out in May that looks good. From the sound of it it's mostly straight ahead versions of standards. Kind of a cool change or them.
