Americans have a shitton of stereotypes that kids try to fit into because they think it's cool. Not all of them do that, of course, but a majority of the kids try to fit in a group that has a stereotype, and hang out with people that are also in that group. That's why you always see like jocks, goths, hipsters, etc. hang out only exclusively within their own little group, and become more and more stereotypical
I lived in Japan until I was 16 and even though jocks/goths/hipsters etc exist, none of them have a huge presence and they don't isolate themselves into their little groups. It's true that jocks are more likely to hang out with jocks and so on and so forth, but there's no real giant group that clumps them all together and they never leave that group.
When I came for high school it was so strange because Asians sort of clump together as a same group even though I hate the Chinese (Koreans and Taiwanese are fine). It was kinda hard to make friends with people that strongly associate themselves with a stereotype.

I suppose that this is partly because USA has a huge entertainment industry with stories and images of ideal life for every life situation and lifestyle. Like just think about how many people here complain about not doing something in high school and how often the idea that you should have done it stems from some kind of hollywood cliche.
