Both rockboxed. Clip has 32gb, used when I'm jogging etc. iPod running on the original 120gb drive for now until I get around buying an SSD for it.

you can, the rockbox build is labeled as unstable but it basically means that you got no recording and no support for the dock connector so no audio playback through a dock or anything. Everything else works.
Although there is a weird bug with USB, but luckily the bootloader has a fallback image that works with USB flawlessly.
As for cleaning the screen, I don't know personally but I pretty much bet it's possible. You could try looking at some disassembly tutorials or something.

Though be warned, the install process involves erasing the whole stock bootloader so there's a chance of really bricking the device. Luckily the tutorials are really foolproof and if you follow them to a tee there should be no problems.
