Just down loading the Korg iMS-20 for my iPad. Wish me luck /prod/.
Also thinking of getting myself a decent virtual synth and like the sound of the U-he Bazille.

If you could only have one virtual synth which one would it be?
>>
>>54628738
Rhythm Studio

Because instead of focusing on making it look like a real synth, or talking about "muh modeling" it's just a well made app with some good sounding synths and a powerful sequencer.
>>
Somebody posted one of those documentaries about adult babies in a /b/ cringethread the other day. I watched it and it gave me an idea for a slightly unnerving instrumental piece (unfinished of course). Thoughts?

Yeah rhythem studio is a good app. I ment to say soft syth for P.c or Mac so far I've only used the bundled ones for Logic

Best daw for ambient/sound scapes without use of vsts?
>>
>>54629137
Probably Reason because the synthesizers in it are some top notch shit. However, Reason 5 is highest available version on the high seas and while the synths and effects are great, the rest kind of stinks like shit.

So I would advise you get Reason 5 and any other DAW that supports rewire, would recommend Ableton Live.

Note: As Reason 5 is 32 bit, you'll need Live 32 bit, or any other 32 bit DAW to be able to Rewire.

I love Reason and I've been an unapologetic propellerhead for over 10 years, but the reason synths aren't always amazing. Mostly the original ones (Subtractor and Malström namely) cut some corners. Yes, the features are great and overall they sound good, but you can't get any decent low Hz out of them without it sounding grainy. They work more like samplers that "speed up" or "slow down" the waveform as you go up and down the scale, rather than doing all the math to generate the tones fresh.

They just aren't that rich and it's hard to make them sound full or bassy without having this weird noisey quantizationy sound
>>
>>54629632

I got it earlier today and it's really blowing my mind with what it can do, I'm buying this shit yo.

I know this is a retarded 15 year old Redditor question, but any way.

How do I get better at making melodies and coming up with chord progressions? Everything I do sounds cheesy, predictable, or typical.

It's more about messing around than actual producing but it is more than worthy of a download.

Just copying this over from soundcloud thread, again!

I'm gonna' reach out and say, if anyone is wanting to learn music theory or composition theory, I'm down to help over skype voice call, I can teach basic to advanced diatonic harmony, basic chromatic-ism, composition theory, instrumental theory, the whole lot!

It's perfectly fine if you just want to learn a tiny bit more of one subject, so long as I can help out, it's all good! No fees or charges, just free help.

skype id is senatordaschle

>>54630000
As for melodies, you have to sing them in your head. It isn't easy to come up with a good melody, you need to be inspired.
As for chord progressions, there's a plenty of online tools for learning music theory.
I'd recommend you to start with memorizing everything that happens in this video.

the picture wasn't especially relevant to what i was saying, other than "quantization". I know how sampling, DA converters, and the sine sinc function work quite thoroughly, as i have an MS in acoustical engineering. my point was low frequencies in the reason synths sound hastily time-stretched/pitch shifted in such a way as they DO sound zippered and noisey, which has nothing to do with the DA conversion that follows

you guys sure are cynical.

here you goes. i did an extra semester (some call it "minoring", others call it a "double major") in Illumination Design as well, as my intention is to get into designing studio and performance spaces, and lighting is as important as sound in some regard.

did pretty good too, dean's list for the whole 2 years.

Oh hai, it's Kim.

Go to kat.ph, search "Ableton Live packs", das it.

Just wondering really. I want to study acoustical engineering myself. What did you do for undergrad?
>>
>>54633116
i did a bachelor of music, majored in production & engineering. it would have been nice to have done a straight-up acoustical engineering bachelor so i would be able to go to the hardcore engineering schools for acoustics, like MIT and such, but you make the best of it you can, and honestly from what i've read about acoustics courses, places like MIT, RIT, and Penn State are good but their reputation is better than the actual course quality, so i'm happy

how do i synthesize a buzzer sound? Like the sound of a shot buzzer found in the NBA?
>>
>>54634183
idunno man it's a toughie. it's similar to a sawtooth starting around 100Hz, but has an emphasis on the harmonics up between around 1k-3k. i would say start with a sawtooth, add some eq and a little reverb, and then add another waveform, maybe another sawtooth or even a square perhaps with a fundamental of like, 400Hz and see what you can make it do.

It literally hurts to wake up this lately. I used to hope production would be my escape but I'm finally accepting that I can't produce music if I'm not feeling alright personally.
>>
>>54634696
It's ok anon, let me hold you.

I just spent nearly 4 hours making kind of a normal track instead of what I'm usually forced to do due to my DAW crashing every time I use more than 10 automation clips - writing solo piano music with occasionally a few bars of drums. I had to limit myself to only CPU light vsts like 3xosc and samples but damn, this is really fun to harmonize everything with many different layers of music.

>>
>>54635168
reason essentials is pretty good for the price, you get a little shafted on the synths but the subtractor is my fav anyway.

the problem is reason doesn't host 3rd party plugins, so you would need to rewire reason essentials into live or pro tools or logic or whatever and use the vsts there
>>

Dont worrie Anon this time will pass. Ive been feeling the same recently major stress of work and when I come home all I can think about is work...Times will change. Chin up
>>
>>54636294
On this note, Is there any advice anyone can give me for getting into some kind of sound design or something music related as work even if it is part time? I'm sick to death of my job and need something that interests me.
Are there any reputable online training courses that will help lead into work that I can sign up for?
Unfortunately I have very little musical talent as in I can hardly play any kind of instrument. Although I have been using small amounts of studio gear on and off for about 10 years, including most DAWs hardware and software synths, samplers and effects. Nowadays I like to mostly just create my own sounds using synths, samples and effects, so I guess I'm into sound design?
>>
Hey /prod/ on ableton I accidentally saved a set in progress as my "Default Set" to start with whenever I open up the program. How do change that back? thx yall
>>
>>54635176
you dont wait to get requested you send your shit around to different venues, bars, other DJs, offer to do a live set on college radio, through people/friends etc.

it's in the preferences, save current set as default

Best DAW for sample based music is..?
>>
>>54637196
Yeah I want to know how to reverse that I accidentally saved a stupid ass set in progress when I want a blank slate. I know I could go through and delete all my changes and save set as default but I'm worried about the miniscule things on it that might still be there. I basically wanna go back to a factory set.
>>
>>54637916

what? learn how ableton works lol
just ctrl+a and delete in arrangement and set up whatever you want your default session shit to be and save it as default. there are no "miniscule things"
