Except it has nothing to do with that. It's how your brain interprets the scene. You're being given very limited information for your brain to work off in this photo. If it appears to you that the light source is in front of the dress, your brain will think the dress is being silhouetted and is therefore white and gold. If you see the light source as coming from behind the dress, the dress will appear to be an over-exposed black and blue.
