What are your memories from '90s MTV? We did not get MTV in our region until 1993. I did not get the channel until much later. I began to see more music videos and its shows around 1996 then in 1998 I started to see it very often. Late '90s MTV was the apex of the channel to me, it was the right mix of music and cartoon shit, before the reality shows took over since the early '00s. I don't know when exactly that I quit giving a shit about MTV but it was around the time Daria ended. I don't know if this was a real decision for me, but it felt right to quit MTV by the time Daria moved on from high school in respect to how MTV became a shadow of itself by that point. I know '80 MTV fags could argue that '90s MTV was already the decline but the cartoons and the animation was what I enjoyed the most from MTV in the '90s, because it was the kind of cartoon you don't see anymore and the kind of cartoon they used to do in Channel 4 when people took animation, and saw all the stuff you could do with it. I got to admire MTV as well Locomotion for making me see around middle school, there is more to cartoons than Cartoon Network, Nicktoons, and Toon Disney. But I must give credit where it is due, even in the '90s, MTV still good music segments like AMP, 120 Minutes (it dating back to the '80s), and Headbanger's Ball before it met a demise. '90s MTV was special, for a moment, you can argue it was the best channel on Earth given a mix of music and cartoon programs that could only be matched from the likes of Locomotion which only existed in Latin America. I long to see the days where people can upload the full archive of Liquid Television, Cartoon Sushi, as well as all the animation MTV has been using since the '80s. Would not that be great?

I live in Canada, so I had Much Music growing up. I remember this video getting a lot of play around 1995 or 1996. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNskpSdrcPY

Also, we got a few good MTV cartoons up here like the Oddities stuff, Aeon Fluxx and Daria. Not sure if we ever got Downtown, but I was lucky enough to catch that on semi-legal pirated DirecTV. I also got to watch a bunch of pro wrestling PPVs for free. Good times.

What was Much Music like? As a non Canadian, the idea of a childhood without Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and MTV is weird to me. Not sure if you guys had Disney.

early mtv was actually kind of cutting edge, both the music and the shows they aired. its kind of impressive
>>

I would say. We didn't realize it as a kids or young adults but '90s MTV was ahead of its time both in music and cartoon shows. In a way, we took for granted and now the internet serves to remind us about how good we had it. Not that I want to go back to the days without fast internet, streams, or torrent., I just pine for the days where you could get the best of both.

i dont mind, the internet is better in pretty much every way. it is pretty cool to think back about how in touch with music/art/youth culture it actually was, though.

We took it for granted at the time because we just assumed it would always be that way.

MTV was ahead of everyone else by implementing reality shows and ditching videos before Youtube made them irrelevant.
>>
>>53733525
It was. Luckily, you can get that and The Head entirely through Amazon under $15 at times. I would own them, but they don't sell them out of Amazon and shipping them here would cost as much as buying a longer series' full box set.

The internet with YouTube is good, but for a while during the early days of the internet, you had shit speed and content was not as easily pirated and found as it is now. You had to rely on usernet, IRC and P2P to download things in poor quality, because anything in good quality that was not 320 kbps mp3 files were going to take forever on your modem. I don't miss that.
>>
>>53733680
there was also a lot of music that to even know existed you would ahve to be part of the scene in some way
>>
>>53733620
I hate their reality shows, even in the '90s shit like The Real World (the original 1992 series) was not fun to watch but I did enjoy The State. I'm on the fence about Tom Green and Jackass. They were funny in middle school but they had their novelty worn off by the time you had sites like YouTube and College Humor where people doing dumb shit was huge.

Yeah, a lot of the obscure music I like were thanks to the video segments in Beavis and Butthead. My favorite pastime as a kid was looking up the weird bands I saw in the show on the internet. You would be amazed at the kind of shit Beavis and Butthead showed us.
