It's time for another prog rock general! Prog February edition.
I want to listen to 20 prog albums in this month (one for each day except weekends). I used to think I was done with prog once I found King Crimson, but there seems to be a whole section of Zeuhl, Avant-Prog, RIO and basically all other things that are still worthwhile, even if they are not your typical Anglo-Prog (KC, Yes, Genesis, etc). Which albums should I get to expand my knowledge on /prog/? Posting library below
Bacamarte - Depois do Fim
Camel - Camel, Mirage, Breathless
Dream Theater - SDOIT, Octavarium, Change of Seasons BC&SL
Dün - Eros
Eivind Aarset - Sonic Codex
EL&P - Brain Salad Surgery
Focus - Moving Waves, Focus III, Hamburguer Concerto, Mother Focus, Focus, Hocus Pocus

What should I get from ELP? Already have Trilogy, ELP and Tarkus.
>>53288853
That's more than enough ELP
Although some people would say Brain Salad as well
>>53288853
>>53288897
How bad is ELP?
>>53288720
I think people usually stop on Jethro Tull
>IIII'l make love to you
dun dun dun dun-dun-dun
>In all good plaaaaaces
get some canterbury scene.
also drop ELP and Rick Wakeman, they aren't worth it
>>53289280
Pretty bad, but have moments of decency, unlike a lot of today's wank-core bands. I blame them and Wakeman for killing prog by going too far with pretentious shit
>>53289598
ELP seems to be unnecessary/derivative/a bad version of other bands, I agree with that
But Rick Wakeman actually makes something different.
Also, how do I get into Canterbury?
>>53289648
>But Rick Wakeman actually makes something different.
Aimlessly slapping an organ until all the notes overlap and make a rather disgusting mess of tones may be different, but it ain't good.
>>53289694
Well, it's been some time I heard it. Probably need to hear it again nwo
>>53288550
Is Riverside good?
What are the worthwhile pink floyd albums?
Is Steve Howe solo any better?
>>53289819
Kind of
Try these
The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
The Mars Volta - Deloused In The Comatorium
Rishloo - Feathergun
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing
Tool - Lateralus
>>53289788
Yes
>>53289818
Piper, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here. Check out the rest if you're a big fan, but most are variants on the same theme
>>53289819
Of course not
>>53289818
Basically everything before the Wall, I guess
>>53289818
Listen to this anon
>>53289898
Bump!
Any good /prog/ releases this year?
>>53289648

Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom
Soft Machine - third
Caravan - ItLoGP
Gong - flying teapot
Hatfield and the North - s/t
National health - s/t
Soft machine - volume two
and report back
>>53290268
one
(or two I guess it's a double album)
>>53289854
Agreed. Also,
Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Old Money
Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Doatimashite (live)
Unicorn Porn - The White Stag
Closure In Moscow - Pink Lemonade
There's a lot of great contemporary Prog-rock actually. OP should listen to more new stuff!
>>53288412
Needs more Gentle Giant
>>53290572
Isn't Gentle Giant the typical Anglo-prog though?
>>53290513
>Closure In Moscow - Pink Lemonade
Counter-recommending this. No one should sit through such shit
>>53290627
Not really typical, they're like Genesis but with a bit more outside influence. Touch of avant-prog, a bit of canterbury. Famous for really interesting a cappella segments
What do you think of Thrak? To me it's not on par with their best, but still a fantastic album.
>>53290513
>Unicorn Porn - The White Stag
Can I get a link for this?
Yes I checked the sticky and soulseek.
>>53290746
Points for trying but it's not really all that interesting. Extra points for making something relatively decent in the prog vacuum that was the 90's
>>53288412
Khan-space shanty, Gentle Giant-three friends,Dragon-Universal Radio,Triumvirat- illusions on a Double Dimple,Gracious- Gracious!
>>53290755
it should still be free on their website;
https://unicornporn.bandcamp.com/album/the-white-stag
If not I'm sure there's a link somewhere in the archive.
>>53290741
eh, I didn't think it was bad. maybe not 5 stars, but it was about a 3/5.
>>53290903
shit thanks. for some reason I was just seeing the $10
>ctrl+f
>no comus
I don't know why they don't get any love around here. They're a really interesting blend of psych folk and prog rock.
>>53291078
they get a whole lotta love in general
can do a couple threads without em, eh?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c87ARHzyO4k
Where has grorious nipponese progrockku been hiding all this time?
>>53291099
I've seen them posted maybe once on here, sans the times I've posted about them.
>>53291078
They get so much love around here, dude. It just gets boring it people bring them up every time.
>>53291118
Seriously? My count would be well over a hundred now, it's one of the few prog albums /mu/ as a whole discusses.
>>53291078
dude, Comus is not good. I can't believe you assholes talked me into listening to that.
And, yeah it get's talked about and praised here constantly. I think it's just because it uses folk instrumentation primarily.
>>53291078
Someone recommended it right here>>53288720
>>53291193
Hey it's that one guy who doesn't like Comus
How are you doing, that one guy who doesn't like Comus
You're the only one, by the way.
>>53291193
>I think it's just because it uses folk instrumentation primarily.
Also because, you know, it's fucking dope?
