Nouns- Still bummed.

It's not another shitty emo band that wallows in self pity with nasally vocals. I'd describe them as lo-fi indie emo. This album is actually pretty well known, but since you don't like emo, I'm assuming you've been putting this one off.

Depends on what you are already into but if you like cutesy indie rock, Joie de Vivre is a good entry-point. I got into emo (screamo actually) with Daïtro so that's obviously recommended as well.

I don't like noise and right now I would want to try listening to noise unless it has like "good vibes". Yes, it's a pretty stoner argument but I don't, for example, power violence is the exact opposite of what I would call "good vibes". Is there noise that doesn't sound like this? Maybe there's some ethereal drone-ish noise that doesn't sound like this but I'm up for recs

Metal is pretty huge as you may already know so it depends on what are you already into.

If you like good old rock I would go with this rec >>52237298 and from there moving either to plain old heavy metal (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Manilla Road or newer bands like Slough Feg (you can try Ghost if you want to be a cool hipster)) or to doom metal. With doom you can try Candlemass, Isole, Warning and Solitude Aeturnus for "epic doom metal". Warning, the level of cheesiness here might turn you off at first.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7u9dlrkgFQ0

Another idea would be this one >>52237319. Trying to get your way into metal with black metal that mixes other genres. Here you could try shoegaze-influenced bands like Alcest, Amesoeurs, Deafheaven (yes, don't listen to the contrarians) or Heretoir. Another bands like Wolves in the Throne Room, Fen and Skagos are also recommended albeit not having a shoegazy sound.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jooUhXZupfQ

A third option would be moving your way to metal with heavier sounding rock bands like Pelican, Russian Circles or Red Sparowes.

>>52237138
Post-rock is a rather broad genre, so it depends on what you're looking for and what you've tried already. Some people distinguish between first, second and third waves.

Try Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock by Talk Talk if you haven't already. Essential listening, they're both gorgeous albums.

Also Burning Off Impurities by Grails, or Doomsdayer's Holiday if you're looking for something "heavier" and more psychedelic, instrumental rock with lots of other influences.

If you have tried Godspeed You Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky etc, that's very different — I like that kind of sad, bombastic post-rock less. There's also Millions Now Living Will Never Die by Tortoise, yet another kind of post-rock (which I have to admit I never got into myself).

Éliane Radigue

Andrew Chalk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P-SkGpxCmY

All three sound quite different; if you don't like one, try another. Some drone records are all about subtle changes (Radigue for instance), others are hypnotic/trance-inducing, or somewhere in between.

>>52237310
Noise is just music that works without conventional melody or rhythm. It's not necessarily aggressive or harsh. Try this for instance:

Classic Merengue (pre ~1970) Slow, sounds really close to perico ripiao sometimes.

The "Golden Age" (1970-1985) Faster, a lot lusher than Classic. Full bands, loud as fuck trumpet sections and percusson. Borrows a lot from Nuyorrican salsa.

Contemporary: Sucks donkey balls. Other than the usual suspects (Juan Luis Guerra, Kinito Mendez) don't bother with it

Field recordings are the audio version of photography.
(The word "phonography" is actually used sometimes.)

Just like photographs, field recordings can be made for documentary/"utilitarian" purposes and/or for artistic purposes.
Field recordings can be released "as is" and listened to just for the pleasure or curiosity of surrounding yourself in a particular environment, or they can be treated and modified, turned into audio compositions.
There is a whole continuum between pure, untreated field recordings and other genres of music (often ambient, sometimes electro-acoustic, I guess any genre could use them).

There is no single "point" to field recordings, especially not when they're treated/modified; Chris Watson's "El Tren Fantasma" for instance is like an audio travelogue, whereas Luc Ferarri's "Presque Rien" is almost like a theatre for the ear, requiring particular attention.
>>
>>52237209
IMO Drone is pretty worthless. All good 'drone' music is better classified as something else. The whole genre is a lot of wanking but is pretty much emotionally and artistically bankrupt. Go noise or ambient.
>>
>>52237465
Okay so listen to this album by Toxic Holocaust, it'll prep you up for when you're ready for black metal. http://youtu.be/5WKhYxxIF7A

Try listening to alot of hardcore post punk, so your ears get used to hearing heavier stuff in general. I'd deff rec Single Mothers' self titled ep, and even some Joyce Manor. When you're done, listen to Napalm Death http://youtu.be/hs_9Lx8F6Sw , which again, is just to get your ears used to heavier stuff, that way we can start getting you into Death, Black, gore-grind etc. without having you being turned off by the sheer intensity. As for BM and death recs, here's some stuff to listen to (in ascending order, getting rawer and heavier with each listen) when you feel you're ready.

nps. It is cool to hate on Juan Luis Guerra because everybody's mother in Latin America has his albums but def. listen to him. He is good, his instrumentation is subdued, he isn't a meme-merenguer (yes, that exist. Dominican merengue relies a lot on punchlines and catchphrases to become "popular") and he is accessible.

However, he turned into a Christfag and now releases bland as fuck songs talking about God. Do not listen to anything past 1994 (well, give Ni Es Lo Mismo Ni Es Igual a try, but honestly, after that he sounds like he lost his balls)

Yes, granted, but we're on a music discussion board, and dart of the discussion of music is identifying what it is one enjoys or doesn't enjoy about any musical entity. I was merely trying to shed light on the fact that it's a pretty asinine thing to do to claim that an entire genre is a phase to grow out of without bringing any actual argument or evidence beyond "I used to like it and now I don't."

I wasn't claiming you had to 'objectively' prove anything. You were claiming that metal is objectively a phase to grow out of, without providing any argument. I was just attempting to make clear to you how bullshit that is.

If je just comes to /mu/ to discuss music he likes, then it's pretty retarded of him to start attacking a genre he doesn't like here:
>>52237677
and here:
>>52237841

Also, he doesn't have to do anything, but in the realms of intellectually dishonest discussion, he should attempt to engage with the points being brought up against him, rather than repeatedly asserting "nah,, you're wrong."

Noise is very weird genre. First off, you don't listen to it like normal music, I'm pretty sure everyone who listens to it that agrees that it's shit. Try using it as ambiance, or try other methods. If you find a good point to listen to it, it works.

Try bluegrass covers of popular rock and metal songs
Otherwise Old Crow Medicine Show are a nice band and you can try the cover album of The Wall by Luther Wright and the Wrongs - Rebuild the Wall
As for metal - try Iron Maiden and Motorhead as a start, anything from the NWOBHM period
then go american with Metallica, Guns n Roses, etc. That's how it works for metalheads most of the time
>>
>>52237308
Try folk metal - Kopriklaani, Finntroll, Alestorm and so on
Heavier that thrash
Doom can be considered heavier than thrash in a sense. Try Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Stoned Jesus and then try Boris
>>

Morphine

Merzbow - Merzbeat
Merzbow - Oersted
Kazumoto Endo - While You Were Out
Kevin Drumm - Sheer Hellish Miasma
The Gerogerigegege - Yellow Trash Bazooka
Die Form & Aube - Ukiyo
Aureole - Alunar (black metal with a lot of noisey qualities)
Sissy Spacek - Sissy Spacek
Yellow Swans - Drift

This should give you a wide variety of noise to start yourslef out on, if you don't like Merzbeat, Drift or While You Were Out you probably won't like noise

Power metal is a much wider genre than most people think. Check out Sonata Arctica's "Fullmoon". Or Kamelot's "A Feast for the Vain". Both of those albums were great power metal ones, but the tracks really stood out to me at least back when I was deep into it.

"Reign of the Elements" by Celesty is a good example of fun cheesy power metal.

"From Hell" and "First Lance of Spain" by Dark Moor are also fun.

Steel Attack's "Diabolic Symphony" is a really great album and track.

I could list a lot of stuff though, these are just some that I really enjoyed back when I was into it. I can still listen to them sometimes for fun but I also feel guilty and try to pretend I don't like them because of /mu/
