Yes, I can agree with this. Philip Glass composed music for the whole trilogy, didn't he? But I think Koyaanisqatsi was at a time he didn't believe in composing for films so he just re-recorded an old composition of his or something like that, right? Nonetheless, fucking amazing soundtrack.

I finally sat down and watched Andrei Rublev. Had the Tarkovsky box set for years but I kept putting off Andrei Rublev because of its length, kinda disappointed with myself for that as I ended up loving it. It's pretty fucking brutal and striking, man. Andrei taking a vow of silence about half way through the film to punish himself for the sin of murdering another man, breaking it in the end to comfort someone is kinda beautiful.
stalker has a really great soundtrack. Also, really glad we have another one of these threads, people were really chill last time

Everything about Birdman was incredible. It's a film that actually makes an artistic statement. Most other oscar contender in recent history just try tell a sad story, with bonus points for white guilt. Birdman is about how we, as human beings, perceive the world around us.

I liked it but honestly the only way you'll find out is if you sit down with it sometime. As you said, it's polarising. It's cool to see Scrlett Johannson trying out a role outside of her comfort zone. Without telling much about the film - it's seriously best not to know anything about it - she plays as an extraterrestrial without human empathy, luring men back to her resting place as her victims. It's partially hidden camera too as some of the men she picks up in her transit van early in the film didn't know they were being filmed, but I think that's only like one or two people. Overall, it's a pretty unsettling film and I think you should watch the trailer just to get a brief impression of what you'll be in for.

There's nothing wrong with Bergman or Tarkovsky, it's just that they are these go-to directors for people who wouldn't dare to say they were into a director which isn't universally considered great and also well known.

I watched Kurosawa's Drunken Angel. A bittersweet tragedy. I loved how honest the film felt, there was no bullshitting and no over sentimentality which I loved. Too much sentiment in films puts me right off from watching them, so it felt very genuine when Drunken Angel had its intimate moments. Also that ending.

Yeah, it definitely seems like it. Been watching a lot of his films recently and it's somewhat charming how genuinely honest they all are. I like how reassuring a lot of his films are too - things don't usually go the way they were planned to, but efforts are appreciated. I'm thinking specifically about Ikiru where the council worker only has a few months to live so he works as hard as he can to help out the community with building the playground and even though he was bullied and intimidated to try and not get the work done, he fucking did it. Even if the scumbag vice-mayor took credit for it, it was enough to know that people really appreciate the man's efforts after his death. That film hit home hard for me.

I remember reading that Haneke intended the film to be a form of punishment for the audience. The more they watched, the more they'd be punished with something they didn't want to see happen. I think it was meant to challenge the audience and how far the audience would go, like the kidnappers in the film, because as an audience we usually want to see bad shit happen on film.
