Hey, /mu/, I'm looking for a nice synthesizer to play ambient music. Price range $300-$700. Any recommendations?

suck more of those mandingo dicks, fag

If you want to play ambient get yourself a good reverb pedal instead.

Something like an Eventide Space.

Not OP, but would you mind expanding on this?
I'm a bass player and I'm itching to make ambient and I know fuck all.

Get a two Nintendo DS Lites with two Korg DS-10 and DS-10 Plus.

Midi keyboard and a sea of pirated vsts and effects.

OP here. I already have a digital reverb (RV-5) and a nice echo (Tera Echo TE-2). I play ambient guitar music, but I would like to expand my sounds with some keys. Is that a bad idea?

Well those huge pads you hear on ambient albums are usually a source (synth, field recordings, whatever) run through expensive reverbs with long decays. Back in the day you could only get those sounds in really expensive studio equipment like the Eventide H8000 and similar, but now those companies make it easier to get those sounds in more affordable packaages (eventide space, H8)

I have a strymon big sky reverb and running any signal through it makes it sound "ambient", it almost feels like cheating

Nah variety is good. It really depends on the kind of ambient you want to make though. If you want to make melodic stuff like Steve Roach a polysynth is a must, but if you're fine with just textural stuff the mini-ms20 would be a fine choice I think.

Thanks you! I'm looking for textural stuff. I should probably stick to the mini ms-20. Do you know any similar synth in a lower price range?
>>
I'd say aim for a nice small (semi) modular analogue synth. like the doepfer dark energy, e.g.

Nah the MS20 is already a huge bargain for what it is, especially since you can find used ones in the $400-$500 range

Maybe look into the Arturia Microbrute if you don't want to spend much though, less features but still a good sound.
