A lot of the solo stuff, side projects and collaborations, production for other artists, etc. is top notch too.
What makes Japan such a big hub for music? I see western artists having Japanese releases, going on tour in Japan, and of course the sheer amount of music that comes out of Japan

I will agree with you 100% there. Some people have already mentioned some artists in this thread that only came about thanks to either Hosono, Sakamoto, or Takahashi.
and I wish Sakamoto a full recovery! no fucking way he will be taken from this earth just yet.

That their cultural output is significant shouldn't actually come as a surprise... but to tell the truth I haven't ever heard anyone acknowledge or quote this statistic before.
