Does any other death metal use clean vocals similar to Bolzer's? They have a weird, almost flamboyant charm to them if that makes any sense.

What would be a couple great tracks ruined by weak production, mediocre drums and occasional uninteresting parts that should have been cut.
As known (or I guess not so much back then) from Be'lakor, they write some delicious melodic riffs and leads, accompanied by atmospheric synths and double kick drums. However, on this one those last two things are not nearly present enough. Most of the keyboard work here is a more classic (and very dull sounding) piano, and most of the drums are very standard, very basic things such as those tediously slow blast beats. The songs lack tempo. This is especially made apparent in the second half of Tre'aste; they speed up here and it clearly works much better.
The intros are always really bland too, they don't do the rest of the song any justice at all, it makes them kind of off-putting.
The piano solo Paths is well written though it seems like it would have worked better with the full band, on its own it feels a bit stretched seeing it repeats itself.

Luckily they fix all of these weak points on their follow-up masterpiece. Re-record this with good production, let Jimmy try the drums again (he improved a lot) and this would be a very good album. As it stands though, it lacks punch and captivation, though the compositions are still good. 6.5~7

Does anyone know anything similar to this?

Bongripper - "Satan", from "Satan Worshipping Doom"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXtfNWlpx8Q

It's basically doom/sludge crossed with death and black.

I'm looking for similar sounding bands and, particularly, doom/sludge with strong riffs like that. All the doom/sluge I have heard is too slow and "light" for me.

yes, and then i'll probably get sick of it after two songs.

>>49231704
"Satan" doesn't really mix black metal with doom at all, the intro is straight black metal and then the rest of the song plunges into groovy doom riffs. have you heard of diSEMBOWELMENT or The Ruins of Beverast? They're both better examples of death/doom and black/doom

You might want to try the early records first, since they turned to industrial metal later on. The next step is obviously Paul Chain's solo stuff, Black Hole, perhaps Opera IX's "Gothik" demo (or their later stuff with Cadaveria, although is a lot more extreme) or Mortuary Drape.

just finished this

this is one of the better blackgaze albums I have heard (if you are into that kind of thing)
Not Alcest/Deafheaven/Lantlos tier, but it's good.

It suffers from being a little formulaic and drums just being double bass constantly through verses, but I really dig this
It borders on DSBM at times, and legitimately feels like an authentic atmospheric BM album a lot with the coarse vocals and extremely aggressive double bass and blast beats

It does get a little indulgent with the quieter post-rock bits but I think they pull it off well, even though there are times where it isn't even needed, they would just pull a easy going crescendo out of a blast beat or something

the fact still stands, that CC plays "standard, generic death metal" also known as boring
>>
>>49242818
Are you retarded? You can't call something standard and generic if it was the first to do so. When it's brand new, it's not 'standard' or generic.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume you're like 16. If you were around when Cannibal first came out, you'd understand how they raised the bar for death metal.
>>
>>49242823

>>
>>49242808

>>
>>49242824
If you find Cannibal Corpse boring but generally like death metal, there's a good chance you're a young kid who's into the watered down, truly generic death metal bands that ripped them off in the first place. Hilarious.
>>
>>49242829
I wasn't that other dude and I never said anything about it being generic.
Also, only "im older than u kid" is something only said by projecting kids who feel more mature than they actually are. Or retards who think it's a good argument I guess.
>>
>>49242790
if you like the Scott Burns sound then CC is one of the best of that era.

DsO went from shitty Darkthrone worship in their beginnings to extremely gaudy, longwinded spooky-scary-skeletons music in SMRC, to half-decent mathcore in Paracletus. No matter which era of DsO you listen to, they are middlebrow garbage and you have no taste in that particular style
>>
>>49242862
Giving examples, At The Gates is completely retarded, in my opinion. The same with Children Of Bodom.
>>
>>49242887
You still missed his point.
>>
>>49242887
So what's your point? You don't find Cannibal Corpse generic but I'm an idiot because I agree with you? You don't make sense. I responded to your post in the first place because it implied that you were agreeing with that other anon's claims of CC being standard/generic.

It's like calling Black Sabbath standard and generic because Saint Vitus and Electric Wizard borrow from their sound. It doesn't make sense. Sabbath invented that particular sound and style in the first place.

I didn't even use the word boring because that's subjective. What isn't subjective is how they weren't standard, generic or a rehash of what was going on at the time.
>>
>>49242914
No I didn't. CC is shit and it spawning many bands doesn't make it good.

Only if you're afraid that anonymous internet strangers will think less of you because you like a band that's popular, and therefor must suck. If you're capable of making your own decisions and forming your own opinions, you'll apply that process to Dimmu Borgir and any other band. These tweens on /mu/ will just keep circle jerking the same albums that were posted on a blog yesterday and continue to craft their finely tuned hipster images, while you'll be too busy enjoying what you like to care.

>You not liking them doesn't mean they're crap, dude. I don't understand why people do this.
This. I wish people would realise this more often.

Personally s/t is great, Legion is one of the best death metal albums ever (no hyperbole it's incredible for 1992), Once and Serpents were really catchy but not classic, but still had good songwriting.. Then they definitely faltered a bit until Scars which imo was quite underrated, Stench was a fantastic return to form then it all got a bit by-the-numbers for me for the next few albums (which tends to happen with most long-running bands these days if you ask me...)

Anyone like Exhumed?

While both of those are true, it was also Morningrise that started to get them attention in the zines and everything.
Hmmm, I'm sure it's only a coincidence that their only 'good' record is the one that set the pattern for what they'd do over the next several albums AND is the one before they started to catch on. Because they'd obviously suck after the did the same things as they did on their first album but were getting more popular. You can't look cool in middle school or online when other people listen to the same bands as you do.

Morbid Angel, Death, Deicide, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, ... I tried most of them. American death metal is not for me.
