>Dream Theater? Yeah....I'm a fan.
Is that Aaron Ellis?
>Animal Collective? Yeah... I'm a fan!
>I love Pantera! Dimebag shreds my friggin face of dude!
Is this supposed to be like a supremely difficult and patrician album? I just listened to it and my only thoughts were "yeah, this is pretty pleasant"
It's honesty kind of boring and plain
Faust is super accessible krautrock. It's weird and unique but still structured like like regular songs
It's very very accessible- I wasn't expecting that. I see it lumped in with poseuresque challenging experimental albums. I like it because it's kind of warm and shimmering but the vocals are pretty awful
>music is my life
>doesn't play an instrument
>music is my life
>never cared enough to listen to music past the top 40 or pop-punk
>music is my life
>plays only one drum
>music is my life
>is a rockist

I know you are trying to get some le wrong generation shit going, but he's right, the 00's and 10's are a downgrade to the already abysmal 90's
why would you care about pop music being bad tho is it really so hard to find things you like that aren't on the radio
I do not play an instrument but I'd like to know how to talk about music.
I'd like to know the terminology so I can have a conversation about it and adequately convey what I enjoy about a piece.

learn music theory. why not learn an instrument just for the fun of it? it will make it way easier to understand theory

And you'll actually be qualified when discussing music. Playing an instrument is a very rewarding hobby. Make sure it's something cool and random like an accordion or something.

Well I'd actually really enjoy playing piano, seems like a lot of effort to go through to be more proficient in musical conversations though.

With their ears
If you had to boil music down to three genres, where all other existing genres are just subgenres, what would the three main genres be?
I think it's
Blues (subgenres include rock, metal, punk)
Jazz (subgenres include soul, hip-hop, etc)
Folk (subgenres include pop, primitivism, etc)
Folk
Classical
Pop

Experimental Pop
This was the Beatles at their most experimental. The White Album was just an attempt to copy Smile
this was their high water mark

Revolution 9, dumb ass
The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded...

Why have I not seen The Unanswered Question discussed more often? It's one of the best music-related lectures I've ever heard. It's actually making me start to appreciate the serialism meme a little more by its analysis.
Sad to see lack of interest in classical recently.
