I highly recommend getting at least a bit familiar with the stuff this fandom had produced (mostly on Youtube, but if you feel like reading fanfiction or browsing DA - it's up to you), especially during 2010~2012 years, when everyone jumped on the bandwagon. There's surprisingly a lot of high quality content there, some of which is getting addressed by the show from time to time.
If you don't like it - don't force it. Don't try to critique it and don't try to take it too seriously. The whole MLP thing has surprisingly high quality, but you have to learn how to cherish it before you'll start actually appreciate it.
It's a great ride full of positive emotions, as long as you aren't being a huge entitled faggot.
Don't watch it to "prove" something - try it and watch it if you like it.
