Somewhat, but a lot of the hatred for Sunset was because she was introduced in EQG, and when EQG was first announced it was hated on the spot, so Sunset was hated along with EQG itself. The first movie having a rather mediocre plot and Sunset having a bellow average villain plan didn't do her any favours either.
By the second movie, the hatred for EQG had simmered down to tolerance so there was less hatred for it being EQG, and they did a good job with Sunset's redemption which endeared her to many.
The redemption is where the irony comes in though. Because that's exactly where they screwed up with Starlight, and where many people start to dislike her. Not helped by how apparent it is that the writers have no clue whatsoever what to actually do with Starlight.
I think Sunset Shimmer got more interesting and had more depth as the movies progressed. She struggles with more than just learning to make friends, she's kind of the protector of the human world.
Since her reform, they haven't done enough with Glimmer to make me really like her yet. Though I do like her interactions with Spike.
