I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

Updates are useless. Updates break shit. Updates only bring shit you don't need, shit you don't want, bloat, and changes shit that you're used to for no reason (lol let's move this button here for NO REASON!). Updates always eventually end up changing the program until it does shit you don't want it to do.
I installed chrome last week because I needed an addon that wasn't available with my version of FF. Yesterday I was out and chrome updated, broke the addon, then rebooted my computer on its own. There is no setting to stop auto-updates in the new chrome, there's no registry entry governing chrome/google updates. I made one, hopefully it works, if not I'll have to uninstall it.
Seriously fuck these shit nigger updates I hate them so fucking much.

You can use a graphical installer like the software center in linux (Basicly it's just like windows store)
But the reason the command line is better is because it gives you a lot more security and it's honestly a good bit faster.
I installed the atom text editor on my windows partition and it took me about 5 to 6 minutes. (thanks, shitty wifi)
Installing it in Ubuntu took me literally less than a minute. (yes I was on the same network)
Plus on Linux it asks you for your pasword before doing most maintincence or root directory access tasks. What this means is that shit can't go around installing itself left and right. Plus yearly upgrades make most viruses written for Linux have a super short life expectancy.
Honestly though, Linux isn't for people that just want to use their computers in a regular sense. Its for people that want to do shit like crawl the web with apache nutch, index that shit to solr and then build a search engine around that.
In essence if you're going to be doing any hard core web app stuff or big data stuff Linux blows most other options right out of the water.
Plus python comes pre installed :^)
Watching IE pone getting bullies really jostles my jordans.
I mean, IE was the reigning champion of internet browsers through the Windows XP era, and really, nothing else competed. But her updates kept getting shittier and shittier, and she kept running slower and slower. All IE is now is a vessel to download faster, less resource-intensive, and more efficient browsers.
Being IE pone must be a woefully tragic existence.
If IE ever manifested itself as a pony in real life, I'd use her regardless of any technical issues she may have. She deserves redemption.

Linux has been plug and play for 10 years now, the GNU equivalents of extremely expensive software like Photoshop and Vegas are better than said software in addition to being free, pretty much the only reason to use Windows is video game compatibility, the same as it ever goddamn was except the "this is hard" excuses are a decade out of date.
Go try it. Watch a modern linux distro, from a thumb drive, auto-detect and auto-configure everything in 5% of the time it took to install windows on that same computer. X hell is gone, netcode hell is gone, dependency hell is gone, unless you get an intentionally nerdy distro like Arch then Linux could be used by old people and children now. I'm reminded of telling my best friends during the original Xbox/Halo: Combat Evolved days that consoles are just cheap computers in boxes. They all insisted about how wrong I was, etc. Today they all have computers I built for them, own a million steam games and think consoles are the stupid wastes of money they are. The same thing is happening with Windows, each new Windows is stupider and it becomes more obvious to the common man what a ripoff it is. They'll make some mistake like charging monthly, they're already in a world of shit from the FORCED upgrades to Win10. Windows 8.1 was an absolute travesty (glad the update was free), Windows 8 was a bit odd but liveable. Windows Vista is complete and utter shit, it eats up half of a computer's RAM. my only problem with XP is that I don't like the asthetics. As for an OS that anyone else produces, well, I don't need it. Except for Mac, that one is a shit, it's unnavigable.

Because the Arch install guide leaves you with a minimal install, rather than directly giving you any insight on what you need to do next, which is very distressing for a new user.
It's on the wiki of course, you just have to hunt for it.

I don't know how experienced you are, but you've installed it right? I think this graphic is helpful for guiding you in what to do post installation.
Of course consult the arch wiki if you dont understand something about anything, because it is very helpful and concise when you actually know what you're looking for.
If you ever need help installing and using certain software, then the wiki will almost certainly have a guide for it on the respective page.
This is including Xorg.
I also don't know if you browse /g/ but /flt/ is helpful with specific questions.
>>27822268
I forgot to say, I would always follow the Arch Wiki's guide for installation, not this one. I don't know if it's out of date, as the installation procedure is somewhat tentative.
However the procedures for the stuff after the installation remains pretty much same.

Yeah, I saw RMS at a grocery store in [undisclosed location] yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Way bars in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each one and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Yes. But a bot only knows what you put on your computer. And you still retain a good 90% of your privacy.
