I thought that NiGHTS' shtick was that NiGHTS lacked their own gender/sex (represented in JoD by being voiced by a woman, but with enough masculinity to cancel it out, like Peter Pan in most stage productions of that story), but can temporarily take on the one of the person it merges with.
