I don't think clinging to the past and sentiment can be compared. The former seems more desperate while the latter is more like treasuring something, a major life event, or someone especially precious.
Sentiment is not neccessarily bad. It is bad when the past is used as an escape from present responsibilities.

Without going too far into headcanon, I can think of reasons why some pictures may be arranged differently. Maybe they are singled out for the very same reason the Princess collects some artifacts - but they replay sensitive feelings and memories.

I could actually see Princess Celestia being an intensely private pony: like although her office seems cosy at first glance, even a plant or fern here and there, there's no pictures or anything. The desk drawers are empty. There is a thin layer of dust on everything besides the chair, the immediate desktop in front of the chair, and a straight line from the desk to the door. The Castle staff are expressly prohibited - in that gentle, Celestia-like way - from entering. That sort of thing.

In season 4 she specifically said she did not look forward to the celebration and the first one after Luna's return was the first she had actually been looking forward to.
I actually think its kind of strange she went through with it at all after Luna was banished. It seems that the populace just ran away with it and more or less demanded she do it. Really goes to show how much she cares for her subjects if she is willing to celebrate something that brings her emotional turmoil just to please them.
To me it sounds like it was not a thing before Luna's banishment and her subjects began to celebrate it after she was banished. Maybe over time Celestia slowly morphed it into what we see in the show, NMM is not mentioned at all but Celestia does say it is a celebration of the defeat of NMM.

If I may give you some advice, you shouldn't concentrate too much on what to write and instead focus more on how you write it, at least for now. Pay attention to three things: grammar, punctuation, capitalization (possibly in this order). These are the things that stand out most. You should concentrate on them because while the content of the story is something people judge according to their personal taste, grammar is not. Especially native speakers tend to be very picky on that, and rightfully so. I don't know about you, but when I read something that is poorly written in my language, I tend to cringe a bit. This does not happen often when I read things in English, for obvious reasons, but I think you understand what I mean.
Other than that, reading more greens may help as well, but don't exceed, because while it helps you getting better it also has the side effect of discouraging or disheartening you, seeing how much other people are good at writing when compared to you (at least that is what happens to me).
Unfortunately, grammar is not something you learn in a couple of days, and I can't tell you how to improve it. Everyone has their way of learning things, I guess.

Pay attention to the grammar in general and the typos. I suggest you write in MS Word or some other program which automatically checks for errors. They are not infallible, but they'll point out most of the errors. There are also websites that perform spell checks, google for them and give them a try.
If I have to point out something in particular, I'd say you have to pay attention to the contracted forms. Those are the most annoying to read, at least for me.
