I would seriously kill myself if I lost a limb.

If I lost a limb in the future, though, and we had super advanced robotics that can give me a fully-functioning arm/leg, then I wouldn't mind at all.
It amazes me that people still power through life with missing limbs. More power to them, to be honest.

You know there are already fully functional prosthetics, they just aren't as flexible as a flesh arm or leg. Some prototypes can even feel touch.
Pls don't kill yourself.
>>

>Some prototypes can even feel touch.
Are they actually for commercial use, though? As in, do they not cost several billion dollars?

There is the DEKA arm, which while not available now, we have been assured that it will be very soon. It's not nearly as good as having an actual arm, but is certainly better than anything we've had before. Yes, there are no fully functional robotic prosthesis in commercial use right this moment, I'd give it a decade before they are, and three before you don't need insurance to pay for it. I suppose I was wrong in them being available right now, it's only by a sall margin.

You could probably get by just fine without one of your legs. I mean, if this guy can be in Delta Force with a prosthetic, what excuse would you have?

So we'll have good robot arms about the same time we have laser fusion and a peaceful solution to the Israel-Palestine problem.

Well here's the thing. A hundred years ago, to watch a movie you had to buy a ticket to a the movies and watch a blurry, black and white, silent image from a projector that used bulky film and was a bitch to operate.
Nowadays, you log onto your computer, click a few buttons, and voila, you can now watch and hear Pewdiepie scream his little Swedish head off. It's not quite Moore's Law, but prosthesis are closer to it than movies are.
>>
>>27471766
you wish
>>
>>27471869
It was a joke about things that we're "twenty years away from" or that'll be ready "very soon". Duke Nukem Forever was to be released "when it's done" for over a decade. Moore's Law has led people to predict the emergence of strong AI "in twenty years or so" for the past forty or fifty years. The idea of expecting something in development to actually be realized as soon as people predict it will be just strikes me as a bit silly.
>>
>>27471997
Often the general public either expects something way too soon, or for it to be way farther in the future than it actually it. One example is how people thought that flight was either impossible or, as a popular newspaper claimed, "millions of years away". Later the same year that was published, the Wright brothers achieved flight. On the other side of the coin, flying cars. Ever since cars were invented people thought that flying cars were sure to follow soon. Though the Transition and the TF-X have been invented, so I guess we can stop with the flying car nonsense. But while the public is really fucking bad at predicting technology,, scientists are normally much better. If you were to ask a scientist when a true AI will be created, their response will likely be "I don't know. Could be any time. In five minutes or five centuries."
>>
>>27472156
Part of the reason the public is so bad at predicting technology that when journalists ask scientists that type of question and get that type of answer, they produce the headline SCIENTIST PREDICTS STRONG AI "IN FIVE MINUTES". So anyone who pays attention to the news is constantly being told that it's only a matter of time before we cure cancer, reverse global warming, and have all our jobs stolen by robots. It's shameful how dishonest the media are.
