As long as I enjoy plushmaking, I'll keep making plushes. But that doesn't mean I'll take commissions forever.
So what happened is that I landed a full time job in my field. As I don't need the income from plushing any more, I only do it for fun like when I started. If the stress of having commissions ends up taking away all the remaining fun, I would rather use my off time making stuff for myself than worrying about having a second, very low paying job.
As of this point, I'm still on the fence if I want to keep taking commissions or not. I'll probably know once my current commission is done if I'm going to continue.

Even if you don't take constant commissions, keep an open mind to doing occasional ones when you have free time. Just be upfront with the customer and be like "Listen. I work a full time job. My issue lies in the fact that when I do save money, unexpected bills come around and I end up having to take from the savings to pay them. And yes, I cut back on my expenses as best as I can, but I make so little money that I need every dime just to get by. I don't drink, I don't smoke, and I don't spend frivolously.
But I am doing what I can to save up. A few dollars here and a few dollars there. But it could easily be a year or two before I have enough. My fear is that I will get the money and the makers will shut down production soon after.

Are you me? Because I've literally had both those ideas before o_O The heating mechanism is much more practical, though - use things like heating pads or even hot water bottles (I've tested the latter with Tavi, it works but you have to be comfortable with the idea of having a bottle full of water in your plushie...) to make super snuggly-snuggles.

With nothing from you and the other lifesize RD plush guy I'm wondering if DIY lifesize RD plushes are just vaporware by default.
Some tips if you do continue: The top mane is the hardest part if you want to make something that doesn't look like all the other RDs out there- but you learn the most by going that way. Use those smaller plushes to prototype it out and scale up. Wet manes are a good fallback though. Her tail and back mane are a pain to do because of the colors and take forever but aren't actually hard to do, but turning all those points sucks.

I'm sure that I'll never 'cast off' MLP as a whole, but there may be a time where I pack a lot of the stuff I have into a box and put it into storage. At one time I had a whole row of Star Wars action figures. Now a bunch of them are in my attic, and only Han Solo and a Storm Trooper made it with me to college. Perhaps one day, all the ponies I have on my desk too will find their way into a box, and only Fluttershy, Celestia, and Derpy will come with me to wherever I go (along with Han Solo, the Storm Trooper, and the Sherman Tank model my grandfather painted for me).
They, and the memories that came with them will never truly be gone, just tucked in the back for safe keeping.

This is actually really the first 'current' fandom I've been a part of thinking about it. I got into Star Wars 2004ish when it was close to the end for the new trilogy (and I wasn't into or old enough to appreciate the expanded universe yet, I was 9).
I got into The Beatles in 2007ish, but while Paul and Ringo still release new albums, there's been nothing 'new' with The Beatles since 1970, except for the Rock Band game and the remastered albums in 2009 (holy shit I remember launch day, it's been 7 years?).
I watched TV shows like The Walking Dead and Law and Order as they came out, but neither of those develop fandoms like MLP. Sure, they develop fandoms, BIG ones, but you don't see anyone making flash games for The Walking Dead, or entire fan episodes of Law and Order. I didn't even get into those as much anyway.
Who knows, perhaps MLP is the only thing I'll ever get into 'this much.'

I'm honestly seriously considering it myself, been researching sewing machines and the like. Problem is I don't live alone and trying to negotiate the shared space with fellow occupants might not work (from what I've seen of sewing setups, they take up a LOT of space, and I wouldn't settle for making anything less than LS). Really you only need enough space to pattern, cut and sew at which amounts to the space of a large desk, the reason people that make a lot of them use entire sewing rooms is mostly just for storage reasons. If you're just starting out then you won't have to worry about storing huge amounts of fabric and stuffing, I've expanded quite a bit and my work area only takes up a corner of my bedroom. That, and trust me, everyone you live with will be thrilled to have someone that can sew. I didn't expect it going in but people are really easily impressed with even a basic knowledge of sewing and its come in handy countless times

yes, I haven't done much since the last time I posted, but I'm working on a different sewing project at the moment and it certainly doesn't help that I don't even have a sewing machine

Any plush makers want to pop in a bit of insight? I'm struggling right now to figure out how to do up Rarity's mane and tail. I'd rather not put wire in if I can help it, but that may be the end option. From what I've seen from some folks is they just curl the ends, then hand sew them into that curled position. Others do like a stuffed tail at the base, then flatten it out toward the end. Or should it be all flat?

I might be able to help, the best way to do it without wires is by cutting darts into the pattern where you want it to curl, since rarity's mane and tail are so curly it will take quite a few. This is a great guid to using darts and the only thing I can add is that you should sew them before you cut the dart out, it just makes it a lot less stressful and gives you a better margin of error

They are really hard to see since it really just folds the fabric you sew in place, a good way to visualize it it is to think of it as making one side shorter so it pulls the other side upward making a curl, which with rarity will take quite a few.
