I've chosen Rose for my fanfic solely because she doesn't have much of a personality, so I would be more comfortable molding her into the character I want to portray her as, and it's gonna be great fun.
As much as it's helped shape the fandom, fanon personalities are cancer for writers, dozens of BG ponies you can't write a story without at least one reader flagging with " but m-muh headcanon!"

On the contrary Anon, I consider background characters to be flexible with their personalities. At least with me personally. Until the show says otherwise, consider background characters a blank canvas to experiment on. Sure, the fandom may have a couple solidified personalities for a few chosen ones, but I consider them optional in the long run of things. (Though they do help and are likable in certain circumstances.)
Diverge from the common vogue, even from the show if possible. In one of my own pet peeves for the fandom, I find it intensely detestable at how quickly a fan writer will overturn their own established material for the sake of "muh canon". Normally I can see why a fan creator may wish to abide by the current canonical material from the show, but that same desire can stifle creativity in certain areas. It... Well, kills anything unique for the creator that draws me to them that makes them standout from the rest.
Aim to stick out in a good way dear Anonymous.
As for how cancerous those "fanon" personalities are... Debatable. Varies with the circumstances from writer to writer if you ask me. For me it is the opposite experience in terms of fanfiction. Oh how detestable do I find where writers compromise their own products as illustrated in my earlier rant.
