Why have we never seen another dragon that is actually around Spike's age? Even at the Gauntlet they were all older than him. I get that they called him a "runt" a few times but he was still younger than them regardless.

I think younger dragons would rather stay with their families, also since they live such long lives they don't need to reproduce much, which would explain why not other baby dragon was around during the episode

Well the popular theory about when all the dragons gather together is that it's for mating. Assuming that all dragons lay their eggs around the same time and that they all hatch around the same time there's simply no one else around his hatching age. He's at least one dragon migration behind since he's seen one.
He must have been in a closet in the magic school for a long ass time.

Dragons are migratory so every kid in a generation would be the same age. Dragons are also long lived, which tend to breed a lot less often.
The teens were probably born two migrations ago. The eggs from the last one haven't hatched yet. Spike was an abnormal hatching so he kind of falls in this weird gap.

Makes sense, IF that's indeed what the migration is for. If it is for mating, then why were the teens there? They weren't attempting to woo any dragonesses. It might just be a social gathering.

Maybe they were not strong enough and died at an earlier age because they weren't pampered like Spike. That is why we only see mature dragons and old dragons, that is my headcanon at least.
