You're half right. String theory generally has 4 different "levels" of parallel universes.
1. Places very far away in our own universe. These would have the same laws of physics and constants as ours.
2. Other regions outside our "universe" separated from us by something. This could be other branes, or regions on our brane separated from us by places where inflation didn't stop. Level 2s have the same basic equations, but might have different constants (mass of the electron and that sort of thing) depending on how they settled out of inflation.
3. Quantum multiverse. Another interpretation of quantum physics is that rather than the wave collapsing when you make a measurement, both possibilities exist but you only ever live in a universe where one does. So Schrodinger's cat is dead and alive at the same time, in parallel universes, but is only ever one of those in yours.
4. Mathematical multiverse. The string landscape, the holographic principle, and other esoteric concepts would allow even the fundamental equations to change.
