So when are you going to buy one of these and meet your waifu in VR, /mlp/?

I'm currently getting an expensive PC built so that I am VR ready, then I'll be getting the Vive. It's coming out one month later in the UK so I have plenty of time to get my computer built.

People would then have to develop a good, functioning pony VR game that has functioning and believable AI. And knowing this fandom and how Hasbro deals with it, they game will probably be in development hell for a couple of years then be forgotten in the dust by the devs, or get a C&D by Hasbro within the first week.

VR is a big forced fad that a lot of companies invested millions on, because it is virtual reality woah

But it doesn't look that good, and it has little to no uses. Why would you want two screens inches away from your eyes? You can create the vr feeling, but for what purpose? Unless you make specific immersive media, it is just a smaller tv attached to your face.

Innovation must have a purpose. Remotes made things easier for viewers, same for console controllers and players. If I make a smell vr, it would be cool but useless

And yes I've tried vr on a tech expo. Several models

It's seems like a giant waste for me since I'd have to upgrade my graphics card and probably get a new motherboard since I'm pretty sure I fucked up my USB 3.0 ports. That, along with having to sacrifice having dual monitors for it also seems like a bad idea.

Also, everything that oculus is offering right now seems kind of underwhelming.

I tried to cobble together a pony doll house VR experience together over the easter. I was blocked by the fact that literally everything is for Source Filmmaker, and that I can't into even basic Blender needed to massage what few models there are to import them into Unity.

This is spot on, I have a few friends who went to the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco last week, and they said EVERYONE there was talking about VR, not because they wanted to (there were some though who were excited to develop for it), but because they felt they had to. I want VR eventually, mostly so I can just dick around, but for the most part this is going to be a lot like companies picking up motion controls after the Wii started kicking ass.

Tutoriel time !

We are going to use those assets :

Download and un-zip them.

SFM use ".mdl" files for its models. It's an archive file and we are going to need something to open it :

Download and open Crowbar, select the file "models\vn_starlight_glimmer_s6.mdl" and click "Decompile", it should create a sub-folder containing (among other thing) "vn_starlight_glimmer_s6.qc"

".qc" files are not something standard, we are going to need a Blender plugin for it :

Once the plugin is installed in Blender, go to "File > Import > SourceEngine" and select "vn_starlight_glimmer_s6.qc"
This should show the model.
Important : Unity animation use the bones' name to identify them. In Blender's scene content view, you should see a puppet named "vn_starlight_glimmer_s6.qc_skeleton".
Rename it to "PonySkeleton", then expand it. There should be another element named "vn_starlight_glimmer_s6.qc_skeleton" inside it, rename it to "PonySkeleton" too.
The other elements can be left as they are.
Go to "File > Export > FBX" and save.

Create a new Unity Project, and put your ".fbx" file in your asset folder and use the Unity editor to put it into a scene.
Congratulation, you got a texture-less non-animated GlimGlam in Unity !
As far as I know, you can safely remove the "Lamp/Cube/Camera" in the GameObject hierarchy.
You should also probably correct the gameobject's scale : with "1 distance unit = 1m" and "ponies are at human crotch's level" the correct scale is around 0.025.

Texture time !

The Starlight ".zip" also contained a "materials" folder. Problem : ".vtf" files are not standard, we are going to need something to convert them :

Download and open VTFEdit, go into "Tool > Convert Folder" and select the "materials\models\VN_mlp\Starlight_S6" folder (where all the ".vtf" files are).
Choose a destination folder, make sure it's set to "png" and press "Convert".
Copy all those ".png" file into your Unity's assets folder.

Starlight's model contain 4 "Skinned Mesh". One for the horn, one for the mane, one for the tail and one for everything else.
Unity automatically create empty materials for those skinned mesh, you just have to set their "Albedo" value with the correct texture file.
You are going to need to play with the "Tiling" and "Offset" parameter to get the eyes in the position/size you want.

Animation time !

Time to open the "Prancey dancey" archive, which contain ... a ".dmx file".
Thankfully, we already have the Blender Source plugin, go to "File > Import > SourceEngine" and select "prancey_dancey_v2.dmx"
This should show a skeleton.
Important : Remember the renaming we had to do with the model's components ? Same here.
Rename all elements named "vn_spitfire1" to "PonySkeleton"
Go to "File > Export > FBX" and save.

Put that ".fbx" in your Unity's assets folder.
Expand it in Unity and it should contain two animation elements named "PonySkeleton|Prancey_dancey_v2". Select the one with the longest duration and click "edit".
In the "clips" array, create a new entry. Name it "PranceyDanceyV2" and select "PonySkeleton|prancey_dancey_v2.001" as its "source take".
Clip on "Clamp range" and make it start at 480 and end at 790. Don't forget to enable "Loop time" so the animation can loop.
The value 480/790 are the frames where the animation really happen inside "PonySkeleton|prancey_dancey_v2.001", you are going to find them manually for each animation you download.

Your "PonySkeleton.fbx" should now contain a third animation element named "PranceyDanceyV2".
Select it and press "Ctrl+D" to duplicate it and get it out of the ".fbx". This will allow us to edit it (otherwise it will be read-only).

Create an animation controller and give it a single state. Put the "PranceyDanceyV2" animation in its "motion" parameter.
The pony gameobject in your scene should already have an animator component at its root, put your animation controller inside.
Click "play" and the model should animate.
If it doesn't, there is probably something wrong with the bones' name. Select your pony-gameobject's root and open the "animation" window.
The bones not recognized by Unity will appear in yellow, rename them in your gameobject so they match with the animation.

Fixing stuff time !

I don't know if it's a bug in Blender import/export or if SFM use a weird coordinate system, but animations always rotate the entire model 90° backward.
Select your pony's root (where the animator is) and open the animation window.
Do "Add property > PonySkeleton > Transform > Rotation" (the '+' sign is often hidden to the right).
Select the first animation frame, and make sure the value for "PonySkeleton.Rotation.x" is set to 0 and not 270.
Do the same for the last animation frame.

Starlight hair are a complete mess during the animation. Mane and Tail have their own bones, and it generally translate badly from one pony to another.
The easiest fix is to remove any bone named "hair" or "tail" in the animation window.

And that's it (I think). Hope it will push some people to make their own VR stuff using SFM assets in Unity.

Except "real" VR require a game engine so the scene can be rendered in real time. Otherwise you are stuck with a movie where the 3D effect only work if you don't move your head too much.

Some artists have made improved models (compared to the "default" SFM), but each time they use a fuck-ton of Blender/Maya specific effects.

Don't know for Vive, but for Oculus there is already some external programs you can use to mess with DirectX and play old games in VR. Skyrim and Mirror Edge are a blast with it (and yeah, the head tracking work perfectly).
