Ponies are based around a high-fantasy world with its own culture, and the ponies themselves are young adults with their own jobs- be it "weather manager/Wonderbolt recruit", "farmer", "fashion designer", "animal caretaker", "post-graduate student/government official", or "baker/party planner".

EQG throws that all away and replaces it with "stock high school drama type 1A".

If ponies are a hamburger, EQG are the fries, and Fandom is the soda, then we're definitely eating at a Wendy's joint back when they switched to sea salt and forgot to actually reduce how much salt they use so the fries ended up tasting like shit.

First of all, they may not retain their jobs but they still have the talents and interests that lead them to do those jobs, so the change isn't as big as you make it out to be. Second, if stock high school drama involves extradimensional beings trying to take over the world, I've been giving the genre too little credit. Third, you're fixating on the fact that it doesn't have the same strengths as the show, but you're ignoring the possibility of it being intended to do something different in the first place.
