Definitely this. MLP was like a challenge, honestly. It was cute, well made, and utterly impossible to ruin through its own merits. However, with nothing but sheer manpower and some of the most disturbed minds on the internet, the show was ruined beyond what anyone would have thought possible.
Let's put this into perspective a bit: the word 'brony' has so much negative stigma associated with it that people on /mlp/ call themselves 'horsefuckers', because horsefucker genuinely has less negative stigma associated with it.
