Modelling is really hard.
Modelling something that can be rigged (moved and posed) is really hard and generally people only specialize in one of those fields.
Modelling something and knowing a decent render engine usually takes two people who are very good and know the same program.
So basically familiarity with the program and specialization.

We're still stuck with those models because making models for source is fucking annoying and 3d modelling in general is hard as shit, and since everyone is already using those models, nobody has bothered to make new ones.

I think that's the issue: they're not in the 3d modeling hobby. They're in the "use these 3d models to make an animation/3d art" hobby. It's a skill some people just don't have any interest in learning because they would rather do the thing they want to do with it.
I see it like someone wanting to make a game not wanting to learn to art. Yes, it would be a very valuable skill and help them in the long run, but they just don't want to because they'd rather do more of exactly what they want.

I think the issue is what we're looking at. In a show the background is the background, our focus is on the foreground with the characters where all the animation went into.
In an MMO you're not really looking at yourself and only kind of "know" where other characters are in relation to you. You're not standing around watching others talk (usually), you're looking at the world and exploring it. So your attention is on the world.
