Watched it for the first time today and it seems to me like it's basically what a large part of the adult fandom expected from FiM. Epic fantasy, a quest, witches, monsters, kings, bandits and sorcerors.
One of my all time faves senpai. Actually kind of hope FiM pays homage to it in some way, shape, or form before the ride ends.
Never seen it before but I came in here triggered by the idea (and possible fact) that there are more people watching the show now who want those things than people who started watching long ago looking for something different.
I fucking love this movie. I love all the rankin bass stuff and I love smoking a bowl and putting on a bakshi film. Hell I even have a playmat currently in the mail that is this screen cap because I think this fucking movie is beautiful.

Don't get me wrong, I like the show as it is. But I won't deny when I first saw the FiM premiere I was kind of hoping for a return of epic fantasy in animated entertainment. The setting has been largely ignored since the 90's.
Instead, while the FiM universe has some fantasy elements, they only take center stage in the twoparters. Itw as less so in the first season, but along the way Equestria has shown more and more parallel elements to real-life North America. Less fantasy worldbuilding, more modern world parodies.

Probably this. Traditional animation was largely a labor of love back in the day. Computers have made it all much too easy. That's why the pioneering works like Toy Story still have a lot of that same heart back when it was pushing new territory while it just seems to have evaporated as it became a more familiar practice. Sure there's exceptions here and there, but that's just how I see the overall picture of the industry today.

It's wierd - TLU isn't what I expected FiM to be at first, but once I realized FiM wasn't going to be a completely shitty 30-minute commercial all the time I rapidly fell in love with the idea of it being something like The Last Unicorn.
Still wish it was more epic fantasy to balance out the cute and slice of life. One does not need to override the other.

Well, it's a couple things. One is the absurd detail you get in every scene shading, texture, small details, etc - unlike flash animation, you know everyone drew all those details into every scene rather than copypasting them from an existing archive.
Another thing is that overall, the animation looks less static. Although FiM's animators have learned to do amazing things with flash, they have trouble escaping the fact that they're working with fixed objects in every point. Eyes, ears, manes and tails, props - all of them are, in the end, fixed objects that stay unchanged from scene to scene. Subtle gestures are harder because each has to have its own prop created for it, whereas a drawn scene will always take the same length of time.
And honestly? Time limitations. If the movie adaption of TLU suffered for fitting it all into a feature film, FiM suffers worse for needing to fit stories into (at most) 2 24-minute blocks.

I love the title song. It's a beautiful movie. I didn't really understand it all that well when I saw it when I was young, but having rewatched it in adulthood I better appreciate the qualities it has. It makes me feel both happy and sad together. It's, like, literally the definition of bittersweet.

Honestly, that's why it appeals to us. Not because of the unicorn, but because it's a story we can genuinely understand even as adults. The characters aren't oversimplified for the sake of the narrative, and the themes it addresses are very real to us. Maybe we even see a touch of ourselves in the Unicorn, becoming 'human' and discovering love and regret the same way we grew up from being kids.

I loved it and I still do, but it's definitely not what I expected out of FiM.
I thought FiM was going to be another G3 MLP but it turned into its own thing.
TLU is a timeless classic, and I think >>25707959 and >>25707657 described it better than I could.
Schmendrick is great.
Just finished watching it, easily some of the best animation and artistic I've ever seen for that period of animation and the music was beautiful ranging from innocent and colourful depicting a story / legend to dark and melancholy when reflecting on their adventure and what has changed within them.
I really hope that this movie is what the mlp movie will be like, great fucking music and characters we will remember for the rest of our livesalso Schmendrick reminds me of Trixie and kind of how she would be as she reforms and makes friends

Good news, though, OP: we;ve seen hints of war and so on in Season 5 at the end, and there will be more Friendship Quests (read: DIPLOMACY) next season, which will no doubt lead to diplomatic relations and shit being formed, plus we have the NEW MAP released for the cover of the Art of Equestria book and that shows undiscovered shit to the west, AND we haven't seen everywhere on the map that's already shown AND Season 6 will be themed "Guardians of Harmony".
So put it all together and there could very well be some sort of shit like that. It looks like that's where we're going doesn't it?
AND of course we'lve had the full season's worth of episodes around a big quest. Even if they were all small chapters because the episodes didn't lead into the next, which would be better, the point is they're able to do that again if they want, they have the approval, and it would give them enough room to flesh it out across a whole season like they did this time, and not squeeze it into the opener and premier.
