The simple fact is that if you outlaw guns only outlaws will have them. They will obtain them through less reputable means, and the black market for firearms will receive a massive boom in business, effectively creating more crime than there was to begin with.
The current state of things is better because law abiding citizens who obtained their guns through legal means can defend themselves against psychotics who obtained their guns illegally.
