Lauren disliked the CMC and the concept so much that she supposedly offered to make a second show entirely aimed at a younger audience, like how Transformers has Rescue Bots. Hasbro said no and made her make them sisters of the main cast.

Wow I'm actually really glad that didn't happen. People used to hate them, but they seem to be pretty well liked now, or at least tolerated. I also think them getting their cutie marks just like that in s1 wouldn't have nearly had the impact it did as happening in s5.

To be fair, pretty much all the S1 CMC episodes were total shit. It wasn't until S2 that they became good (and some of them even god tier). So maybe she thought no one could use them right.

They were shit because Faust didn't want to deal with the characters to begin with. This is also why Owls Well is the way it is. She didn't know what to do with Spike by her own confession and in all likelihood did not care. Like 2/3 of the CMC and the basic concept of the three, it was a corporate mandate to keep a hold on trademarks. And she treated them like shit because she didn't want them.
The buildup of them getting their marks was destroyed because they got them all at the same time and they look like total shit. You need a fucking magnifying glass in order to deferentiate them.
Notice how many kids are now in Cheerilee's class? She started out with 12 students and now has 32 (that's how many students were in Crusaders of the Lost Mark). Hasbro brought back Button Mash and added new kids like SuperTeeth and StrongFilly.
The spinoff series will age all the kids up and have them in high school. The CMC will be doing what they always did, meddling in other ponies' problems. A MLP high school series with actual ponies. It could be fun.
The CMC's cutie marks don't look that bad, but they do need to be larger.
