I mainly see that incident as the catalyst. Other shit in her life led up to her discovering the cutie mark ripping spell, which soon led to her making Our Town.

Also Twilight's lived a cushy life in general and likely never had much practice in combat spells. Starlight on the other hand has likely practiced combat stuff a lot given that she's a loner.

Twilight may be book smart, but when it comes to actually applying that shit she falls short.
