I'm guessing he'll appear at the end of Starlight's friendship education as a final exam of sorts from a meta standpoint. They randomly bump into each other or maybe Starlight sets of on a quest to find him after learning he left Canterlot years ago and went elsewhere faraway.
I would like it if they reconciled but at the same time I think it be a good message (albeit a sad one) that sometimes people just grow apart and neither party is to blame.
Or maybe they will go the heartwarming route after dragging us through some gut-punches to the feels. Have him not recognize her right away or reveal the divide between the 2 was a misunderstanding.
