Realistically, is there anything ELSE to do with deer within the confines of the show?
The boner for Tolkien, the ubiquity of magic, the mysteriousness of the forests, it all adds up way too perfectly for MLP deer, if they would appear, to be anything but elf expys. It's an obvious thing to do, and the writers are no longer clever enough to think of anything else.
