It's a good thing Twilight Sparkle was able to stop Starlight Glimmer in time. Who knows what might have become of Equestria otherwise? Or what became of the other Equestrias, for that matter. It might have been interesting to have seen how the altered events led to their present situations, academically.

Alicorns are unique and have access to unique magic, but it doesn't automatically make them more powerful than the most powerful unicorns. We saw 2 alicorns fought to a standstill by two different unicorns this episode.
Also explains the likes of Starswirl the bearded. Alicorn power scaling isn't linear

I'm not convinced that becoming an alicorn actually give you a significant magical power boost at this point. It's not unreasonable to jump to that conclusion, since they're bigger ponies and have bigger horns, but...
If anything, one of the most consistent things we've seen in the show is if some really tough monster comes along, the alicorns will consistently get their asses handed to them.
The only thing that even begins to refute this is the princess fusion at the end of S4.Powerlevels will never matter in MLP. Nothing on the show can be solved with violence.

The shield spell around the crystal kindom was powered by love, which would normally be provided by the heart but can be believably provided by Candyass because her ass.
If not that, then unicorns can share spells. She could have also been trading places with Shiny until he got crystal'd. She definitely maintained the shield for less total time and with lesser effect and more effort.

Starlight was extremely obviously prepared for magical combat with Twilight from the very start, while Twilight is shown to be consistently inexperienced with combat.

All Sombra did was to make some rocks appear and honestly the the royal guard ponies didn't seem to be that affected by bashing into them.
Him making a huge advance in a short time against a country not prepared for war and taking so much land isn't something that's unbelievable. If Celestia didn't send Cadence there Sombra would be in charge almost instant;y and the crystal horses were already broken so mobilizing an army of slaves wouldn't take so much time especially since they were just a big city in the end.
Mobilizing the entire country of Equestria for war on the other hand? It would take some time. More than enough to make a huge push.

And she won against NMM and Chrysalis in the Sombra war timeline. She won against her in the Tirek timeline. She manage to redeem Luna on her own in the Discord timeline.

Or Sombra could have launched a surprise attack and Celestia couldn't just teleport in the middle of his army and just vaporize everyone? That's the entire fucking point of a surprise attack. That's the entire point of a Blitzkrieg. Maybe they're slowly pushing them back. Maybe they are now in a stalemate and it's jsut a war of attrition at this point. Or yeah maybe Sombra is winning.
The point is that there's literally nothing in the show to confirm or deny any of this.
Equestria is a huge country. Amasing the entire army, going into full war economy mode, modifying the factories and having all the citizens help the war effort takes a shitload of time, time in which Sombra could advance with next to no opposition because it would be dumb to send part of your army to oppose him while the rest of your army isn't even organized.
Once they go in full war mode they could stop his advance or even push him back.

Aside from time travel plot holes and the obligatory rushed corny ending that i'm already used to, it was a great finale.
This season was on par with S1.
The writing was so fucking on point through the season, except maybe for 2 episodes(you know the ones), which i think makes it the most consistent season so far. Is like the writers were actually coordinated and in tune this time.

I was kind of hoping for one of the timelines to show a villain get everything they want and be totally depressed about it. Twilight shows up to then listen to a monologue of how none of it felt right, the villain just kept on going expecting something to stop them but ultimately it was all gone by the time they were finished with the land. One of the points that I was trying to make, though, is based on their tie in the second round. I think, with her levitation spell, Starlight was forced to put significantly more magical effort into holding her end of the battle up than Twilight. Had they been on the ground, Starlight would have overpowered Twilight.
Then, despite Twilight getting off a sucker punch she still isn't able to decisively end the encounter. She finally decides she doesn't have it in her to beat Starlight and takes a different approach.
