Nyx is an OC made from the story "Past sins" by pen stroke. She is the reincarnation of nightmare moon done via black magic, however celestia fucked it up so it turned into a filly.
She is adopted by twilight and after sometime she turns back into nightmare moon, fucked Celestia and luna up, felt bad after a week. she was turned back into a filly and given to twilight to raise.

There was this fanfic a while back called Past Sins, and it had something to do with some ponies who were devoted to Nightmare Moon, and formed some kind of cult around bringing her back. What they did was gather those broken shell pieces of Nightmare Moon that was left behind after her defeat (watch the first two episodes again to see what I mean), and kidnapped Twilight for her magic to complete the spell. It got thwarted in the end, and this dark alicorn filly was Nightmare Moon reincarnate, but with no memories.
In other words, it's dark matter come to life in the shape of a pony, and with no memories of what it wants to do. Twilight feels guilty about her and takes her in as her "daughter" of sorts. It's completely out of character for anyone, and it's just a general shit fic that tries to tug at your heartstrings. Nothing more.
